Director of Human Resources, Labor Relations – Remote Illinois

Lead enterprise labor relations strategy for Salute, serving as the subject-matter expert on unions, collective bargaining, and labor law. Advise leaders, negotiate agreements, manage high-risk disputes, and strengthen labor practices across global operations.

Description

  • Serve as Salute’s enterprise expert on collective bargaining, contract interpretation, and union strategy
  • Guide HR business partners, site leaders, and executives through complex grievances, arbitrations, and contract administration
  • Develop and direct bargaining strategies as lead negotiator or chief strategist
  • Manage the organization’s most significant labor risks, including arbitration, NLRB charges, and labor board proceedings
  • Maintain expertise in the NLRA and labor and employment law across domestic and international jurisdictions
  • Create and maintain enterprise labor relations playbooks, position papers, and precedent guidance
  • Counsel leaders on union organizing efforts and broader labor relations strategy
  • Lead strike and contingency planning and provide guidance during active labor disputes
  • Own labor relations reporting and metrics, turning insights into enterprise-wide strategy
  • Coach and develop HR business partners, generalists, and operations leaders
  • Create and deliver labor relations training and certification programs
  • Support HR business partners as a technical advisor on complex or precedent-setting issues
  • Develop toolkits, templates, and decision frameworks for recurring labor matters
  • Establish enterprise standards for CBA administration, grievance management, and negotiation practices
  • Integrate labor relations strategy with workforce planning, M&A, and organizational transformation
  • Evaluate workforce and labor data to identify enterprise risks and opportunities
  • Ensure consistent contract interpretation and precedent across locations and regions
  • Oversee compliance with CBAs, labor regulations, employment law, and company policies
  • Track labor and employment law developments across global jurisdictions
  • Collaborate with Legal and Compliance on arbitrations, NLRB matters, and labor proceedings
  • Act as a labor relations partner to HR Operations and regional HR teams
  • Provide subject-matter support on local labor requirements and works council matters
  • Promote consistent labor practices and knowledge sharing across regions and business units

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, industrial relations, labor relations, or a related field
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible labor relations experience
  • Established expertise in collective bargaining and contract administration
  • Track record as lead negotiator in multiple CBA negotiations, including complex or contested bargaining
  • Advanced knowledge of the NLRA, labor board practice, arbitration procedures, and labor and employment law across multiple jurisdictions
  • Experience serving as an escalation resource or technical advisor to HR professionals on labor issues
  • Background developing labor relations training, playbooks, or capability-building programs
  • Experience supporting unionized operations across multiple sites, states, or countries
  • Outstanding negotiation, analytical, and communication abilities
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in human resources, business administration, labor relations, or a related field; JD is a plus
  • Preferred: SHRM-SCP, SPHR, GPHR, or comparable certification
  • Preferred: Formal training in labor relations or arbitration
  • Preferred: Experience in a dedicated labor relations subject-matter, center-of-excellence, or corporate labor relations role
  • Preferred: Direct experience with NLRB litigation, arbitration hearings, and large-scale strike or contingency planning
  • Preferred: Experience supporting unionized manufacturing, distribution, logistics, healthcare, retail, or industrial organizations
  • Preferred: Experience supporting international employee groups, works councils, and global labor relations programs
