Associate Director, Publishing — PLOS | Remote UK

Lead PLOS’s open-access journal portfolio strategy, investment planning, and development. Manage distributed publishing teams while advancing equitable scholarly communication.

Description

  • Set strategic direction for PLOS’s journal portfolio, connecting portfolio priorities, publishing investment, and journal development with organizational objectives and its mission.
  • Manage and develop Publishers accountable for journal portfolio performance and strategic growth.
  • Own portfolio-level publishing performance and convert organizational strategy into actionable priorities.
  • Apply publishing metrics, financial data, market intelligence, and research-community insight to inform decisions, uncover growth and innovation opportunities, and mitigate risk.
  • Set expectations and accountability frameworks while providing coaching, professional development, succession planning, and performance management for direct reports.
  • Create and execute portfolio-wide publishing strategies supported by differentiated value propositions.
  • Lead portfolio assessments and formulate recommendations covering journal positioning, growth, performance, and future direction.
  • Assess and develop new journals, products, services, and publishing approaches.
  • Convert organizational strategy into clear portfolio priorities, objectives, and delivery plans.
  • Manage publishing budgets and forecasts, directing resources responsibly.
  • Act for the Director, Publishing & Publishing Operations as required.
  • Cultivate relationships with editors, researchers, institutions, societies, partner organizations, and cross-functional colleagues.
  • Collaborate with Editorial, Publishing Operations, Sales, Global Publishing Development, Product, Technology, Marketing, Finance, and Research Integrity teams.
  • Help maintain effective journal policies, processes, services, and quality standards.
  • Improve journal positioning, audience engagement, portfolio visibility, and demand generation.
  • Lead culture change, cross-functional collaboration, organizational alignment, and disciplined change management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Approach business challenges with curiosity, investigating root causes and grounding solutions in PLOS’s strategy and mission.
  • Demonstrated experience launching open-access journals from proposal through publication.
  • Strong commercial and financial capability, including budgeting, forecasting, business planning, and P&L ownership.
  • Extensive STM publishing experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Experience managing senior publishing professionals or equivalent portfolio leaders.
  • Record of creating and delivering strategic plans that produce measurable business and operational results.
  • Strong history of building and leading high-performing teams across geographic locations.
  • Outstanding communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder-management abilities across cultures, disciplines, and functions.
  • Commitment to open access and the transformation of scholarly communication, with genuine interest in constructive engagement with the scientific community.
  • Preferred: experience leading large-scale journal portfolios and/or megajournals.
  • Ability to remain seated for extended periods while working at a computer.
  • Willingness to undertake occasional national and international travel.
  • Flexibility to work across time zones when needed.
