Backend Engineer, Real-Time Translation (Hybrid)

Build backend systems for LILT’s real-time translation platform, including streaming services, interpreter routing, meeting integrations, and observability. Work across APIs, event-driven workflows, and production services that support live multilingual communication.

Description

  • Develop and operate backend services for the real-time translation pipeline, covering audio ingestion, diarization integrations, streaming ASR/MT coordination, and result distribution.
  • Create event-driven routing that directs low-confidence segments to the appropriate on-call interpreter based on language.
  • Develop APIs and services for bot or agent participants and the meeting side panel.
  • Help build interpreter correction workflows and real-time broadcast capabilities.
  • Create and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end test coverage.
  • Support GitHub Actions-based continuous integration and delivery pipelines.
  • Add logging, metrics, and tracing to improve service observability.
  • Collaborate with frontend and full-stack engineers on API contracts for the live meeting interface and interpreter workbench.
  • Join the on-call rotation and investigate production incidents.
  • Produce post-meeting deliverables such as diarized transcripts, TXT, WebVTT, and JSON exports, plus per-line verification metadata.
  • Work with senior engineers and Product to move services and features from initial design into production.

Requirements

  • Two to five years of professional experience developing backend software.
  • Production experience with real-time or streaming data systems is preferred.
  • Experience creating REST endpoints and streaming services with WebSockets, gRPC, message queues, or similar low-latency, event-driven approaches.
  • Strong experience with Node.js/TypeScript, Java, Python, or comparable backend technologies, with the flexibility to work across multiple ecosystems.
  • Experience developing and consuming REST and GraphQL APIs, including authentication with OAuth, API keys or tokens, and service accounts.
  • Experience modeling relational or NoSQL data for session state, transcripts, and configuration.
  • Experience with CI/CD and automated integration or end-to-end testing.
  • Able to deliver well-defined tickets or specifications with limited supervision and raise blockers or schedule risks early.
  • Must be a US citizen residing in the United States.
  • Experience with speech or audio systems, including diarization, streaming ASR, or audio-stream processing, is a strong advantage.
  • Experience integrating third-party platform APIs, SDKs, or webhooks is a strong advantage.
  • Familiarity with localization or TMS processes, including XLIFF, Translation Memory, and machine-translation versus human-translation workflows, is a strong advantage.
  • Experience with event-driven publish-subscribe systems such as Kafka or Pub/Sub is a strong advantage.
  • Exposure to frontend development or React is a strong advantage.
  • Microsoft Teams app or bot development experience is a bonus.
  • Experience taking products from 0 to 1 within an established company is a bonus.
  • Interest in or academic work related to NLP or machine-learning systems is a bonus.
  • Experience with production observability platforms such as Datadog is a bonus.

Benefits

  • Opportunities for professional growth.
  • Work with colleagues across global teams.
  • Access to modern engineering tools.
  • Base salary ranging from $100,612 to $138,000, based on location and factors such as experience, skills, and qualifications.
