Senior Manager, Data Engineering — KIPP Foundation (Remote, United States)

Lead KIPP Foundation’s data architecture, engineering pipelines, quality framework, and MLOps foundations. The role combines agile delivery, cross-functional partnership, and technical team development.

Description

  • Own end-to-end delivery of data architecture and pipeline solutions, from planning and requirements through design, development, and testing
  • Build and govern the semantic layer as a trusted source for business intelligence and reporting
  • Run sprint and release operations, resolve dependencies, and remove delivery blockers
  • Analyze sprint, operational efficiency, and DevOps metrics to drive continuous improvement
  • Create and operate a data quality framework covering monitoring, alerts, root-cause analysis, troubleshooting, resolution, and impact assessment
  • Establish foundational capabilities for MLOps, machine learning, feature engineering, and ML/AI platform integration
  • Manage and improve data architecture, pipelines, monitoring standards, and operational controls
  • Collaborate with Analytics, Application Development, Data Collection Strategy & Operations, IT Operations, Product Management, and Regional Data Systems & Strategy teams
  • Develop and execute project plans while balancing competing priorities
  • Provide clear visibility into progress, risks, and dependencies through consistent tracking and communication
  • Coach team members on data solutions, quality practices, review standards, and documentation
  • Manage and develop employees or contractors through clear expectations, feedback, and coaching
  • Report to the Senior Director of Data Management & Governance

Requirements

  • Skill in developing project plans, balancing priorities, delegating effectively, and maintaining knowledge management systems

  • Strong problem-solving skills, initiative, risk awareness, and proactive solution development
  • Experience coaching teammates and managing performance and development goals
  • Knowledge of SQL, Spark, PySpark, on-premises and cloud data platforms, CI/CD, ETL pipelines, version control, SSIS, agile sprint operations, project management tools, and machine learning principles
  • At least 8 years of professional experience in data engineering, infrastructure engineering, or a closely related technical field
  • Experience with SQL-based platforms and modern cloud data warehouse or lakehouse technologies such as Fabric/OneLake, Snowflake, or Databricks
  • Experience running agile sprints, tracking DevOps metrics, and using JIRA or comparable tools
  • Experience with Git-based version control and CI/CD workflows on platforms such as Bitbucket, GitHub, and Azure DevOps
  • Advanced proficiency in SSIS, Spark, PySpark, and SQL
  • Experience operating data platforms and building or managing ETL processes and pipelines
  • Experience managing and mentoring data engineers
  • Understanding of machine learning workflows and ML/AI enablement for data platforms
  • Bachelor’s degree in data engineering, computer science, or a related field
