Business Development Manager, Medical Communications & Life Sciences (Hybrid)

Drive U.S. pharmaceutical and biotechnology client growth for a global medical communications and life sciences agency. Build senior stakeholder relationships and win new business through strategic, field-based development.

Description

  • Create and execute strategies to win pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients
  • Map target organizations and identify key senior decision-makers
  • Develop relationships with Heads, Vice Presidents, Directors, and other senior leaders in Medical Affairs and Medical Information
  • Build qualified opportunities, with emphasis on emerging and smaller pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies
  • Use focused outreach to create valuable senior-level connections
  • Activate established industry relationships and professional networks to uncover opportunities
  • Analyze target accounts, therapeutic areas, business priorities, and likely needs
  • Own opportunities from prospecting and qualification through discovery, proposals, negotiation, and close
  • Assess prospective clients’ medical, scientific, and communications needs and match them with relevant agency capabilities
  • Present the organization as a strategic partner and trusted advisor
  • Create engagement plans that support durable client relationships
  • Keep the business development pipeline accurate, current, and qualified
  • Represent the organization at pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical communications, scientific, and industry events
  • Strengthen connections through digital engagement and in-person meetings
  • Partner with scientific, medical, and operational colleagues to clarify requirements and shape suitable solutions
  • Track sector and therapeutic-area developments to surface new commercial opportunities
  • Help expand the organization’s presence across the U.S. market
  • Work from a professional home office while meeting clients and attending conferences, networking events, scientific meetings, and other industry gatherings
  • Travel throughout California and elsewhere in the U.S. when needed

Requirements

  • At least five years of experience in business development, client acquisition, or commercial growth within medical communications, healthcare communications, life sciences, or a related agency setting
  • Track record of winning new business from pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology companies
  • Demonstrated ownership of the full B2B business development process, from prospecting through close
  • Experience engaging senior Medical Affairs and/or Medical Information stakeholders, preferably Heads, Vice Presidents, or Directors
  • Solid understanding of how pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies work with external agency partners
  • Background selling or positioning professional services, medical communications, scientific communications, medical affairs, medical information, or related solutions
  • Experience opening and developing relationships with new pharmaceutical and biotechnology accounts
  • Consultative sales approach with strong value-based communication
  • Strong presentation, negotiation, stakeholder management, and relationship-building capabilities
  • Ability to grasp complex scientific and medical services and explain their value to prospective clients
  • Experience representing an organization at conferences, congresses, networking events, and scientific meetings
  • Proactive, commercially focused, and self-directed working style
  • Highly organized with dependable follow-through
  • Ability to work independently remotely while collaborating effectively with a global team
  • Willingness and ability to travel within California and elsewhere in the U.S. as required
  • Current residence in California

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Life Sciences or a closely related discipline preferred
  • Successful completion of the applicable background check
