Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies is a 2024-founded automotive technology joint venture building the software foundation for electric vehicles. Its work spans vehicle operating systems, zonal controllers, cloud and connectivity services, in-vehicle intelligence, artificial intelligence, and vehicle security. The company develops B2B software platforms and engineering tools for automotive brands, helping support more capable, connected, secure, and updateable vehicles while advancing shared software architectures for the electric mobility market.

Staff Systems Engineer, Vehicle Power Modes – Palo Alto (Hybrid)

Lead the architecture of vehicle power-mode strategies for Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies’ electric-vehicle technology joint venture. Define safe, deterministic power management across next-generation electrical architectures.

Description

  • Coordinate with external customer brands to align desired vehicle behavior with technical architecture constraints.
  • Ensure core vehicle power-mode software supports varied vehicle portfolios without brand-specific modifications.
  • Own the end-to-end technical definition of the vehicle power-mode system.
  • Partner with the TPM to scope and prioritize the technical roadmap against vehicle-program milestones.
  • Lead arbitration-logic design for competing subsystem power requests and safe, predictable power states.
  • Define software interfaces and APIs for the power-mode service across an Ethernet backbone with zonal controllers.
  • Implement power-related Limp-Home strategies with functional-safety and energy-management teams.
  • Orchestrate tiered load shedding and degraded-state transitions during system failures.
  • Translate high-level vehicle requirements into testable software, hardware, and integration specifications.
  • Define deterministic timing and sequencing between power-mode software and low- and high-voltage subsystems.
  • Manage vehicle-level sleep budgets in line with range and standing-time targets.
  • Support SIL and HIL test-case definition for high-risk transient power transitions.
  • Lead DFMEA and FTA functional analyses for hardware failures and degraded system states.
  • Mentor engineers on requirements decomposition, traceability, and complex power-system integration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, systems engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 8 years of systems-engineering experience with complex electromechanical platforms.
  • Capability to design timing-critical sequences for high-transient loads while maintaining system stability.
  • Deep knowledge of high-voltage-to-low-voltage conversion and stable power rails with limited energy buffering.
  • Expertise with requirements-management tools such as Flow, Jama, Polarion, or DOORS.
  • Experience converting high-level system intent into testable software and hardware specifications.
  • Ability to set technical direction, lead cross-functional negotiations, and reconcile competing requirements.
  • Strong experience with DFMEA and Fault Tree Analysis.
  • Ability to manage technical scope across multiple vehicle platforms at once.
  • Familiarity with ISO 26262, DO-178C, or IEC 61508.
  • Experience designing fail-safe power-state transitions.
  • Ability to convert qualitative user experience goals into quantitative system requirements and technical specifications.

Benefits

  • Annual company performance bonus with a 15% target for this role.
  • Restricted Stock Units, subject to board approval and applicable vesting requirements.
  • Health coverage.
  • Retirement savings plan.
  • Paid time off.
  • Family-planning programs.
  • Hybrid work arrangement.
  • Up to 10% travel as required.
