Somali Interpreter – Humanitarian Operations

Provide confidential Somali-English interpretation and translation for ICRC humanitarian protection work. Support detainee visits, family tracing, authorities’ dialogue, and field reporting across Somalia and Kenya.

Description

  • Interpret confidential interviews with people deprived of liberty between Somali and English
  • Provide interpretation for ICRC institutional outreach and dialogue with authorities
  • Support family-link activities, including Red Cross messages, family tracing, and detainee-family visits
  • Translate Somali newspaper articles, correspondence, and other materials into written English
  • Assess and report on detention conditions, security, and other matters within the ICRC mandate
  • Assist with additional protection activities as required
  • Engage with authorities, other organizations, beneficiaries, and ICRC personnel
  • Build operational contact networks when needed

Requirements

  • C1-level English proficiency is required
  • C1-level Somali proficiency is required
  • Additional ICRC operational languages—French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, or Portuguese—are advantageous
  • At least two years of professional experience
  • Prior interpreting or translation experience is preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to humanitarian work
  • Ability to perform effectively under pressure in potentially dangerous conditions
  • Open-minded, adaptable, and flexible
  • Good health and willingness to complete a medical examination before field deployment
  • Valid licence to drive manual-transmission vehicles
  • Willingness to accept unaccompanied postings for the first two missions, each lasting at least 12 months, or 24 months in total
  • University-level education in interpretation or translation is advantageous
