Senior Payroll Manager - TELUS Canada Hybrid

Lead TELUS’s national Canadian payroll operation for more than 25,000 employees. Own compliance, payroll systems, team leadership, financial controls, and multi-province delivery.

Description

  • Direct end-to-end biweekly and monthly payroll processing for 25,000 salaried and hourly employees across every Canadian province and territory
  • Safeguard the accuracy and timeliness of payroll calculations, deductions, garnishments, taxable benefits, and expense reimbursements
  • Oversee payroll finance activities, including general ledger postings, journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and wire transfers
  • Own year-end payroll activities, including T4/T4A and RL-1 preparation, filing, distribution, and PIER report resolution
  • Ensure compliance with Canadian federal and provincial employment standards, tax legislation, CRA guidance, and Revenu Québec requirements
  • Maintain payroll controls supporting corporate governance and audit obligations
  • Act as the primary contact for internal, external, and government regulatory audits
  • Track changes to payroll legislation and regulations, implementing necessary process and system updates
  • Lead, coach, and manage payroll specialists and advisors
  • Define operational KPIs and performance benchmarks
  • Advance payroll process improvement and automation programs
  • Act as the functional and business lead for enterprise payroll software and HRIS modules
  • Collaborate with IT, HR Operations, and Finance to test, configure, and deploy system upgrades, interfaces, and tools
  • Provide guidance to People & Culture, Finance, Total Rewards, and Legal on complex payroll issues
  • Resolve escalated payroll questions and complex compensation cases
  • Manage partnerships with third-party payroll providers, benefit carriers, and tax authorities

Requirements

  • Seven to ten or more years of progressive payroll management experience in large Canadian organizations operating across multiple provinces and supporting more than 20,000 employees
  • Extensive practical experience with enterprise HRIS and payroll platforms; SAP Payroll or SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Payroll is strongly preferred
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial payroll law, CRA and Revenu Québec requirements, statutory remittances, and audit frameworks
  • Experience overseeing payroll in both unionized and non-unionized environments
  • Demonstrated success leading, coaching, and developing high-performing payroll operations teams
  • Certified Payroll Manager designation from the National Payroll Institute is required
  • CPA designation or a post-secondary degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or Business Administration is preferred
  • Highly analytical, detail-focused, and capable of solving quantitative problems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex financial information to non-finance audiences
  • Strong change-management capability and comfort working in a fast-changing corporate setting
  • Advanced English proficiency is required
  • English and French fluency in both spoken and written communication is a strong asset
