Amharic, Oromo and Tigrinya Interpreter - Ethiopia

Support ICRC humanitarian operations in Ethiopia by interpreting between Amharic, Oromo or Tigrinya and English. The role covers protection, detention, family-link activities, field deployment and humanitarian reporting.

Description

  • Provide oral interpretation between Amharic, Oromo or Tigrinya and English.
  • Interpret confidential interviews with people deprived of liberty.
  • Support ICRC institutional dissemination and dialogue with authorities.
  • Interpret family-link activities, including Red Cross message delivery, family tracing and visits to detainees' families.
  • Translate newspaper articles, correspondence and other materials from Amharic, Oromo or Tigrinya into written English.
  • Analyze and report on detention conditions, security and other matters related to the ICRC mandate.
  • Assist with additional protection activities as required.
  • Engage with authorities, other organizations' representatives, beneficiaries and staff from other departments.
  • Build operational contacts when required.

Requirements

  • Excellent English proficiency at C1 level is required.
  • Excellent proficiency in Amharic, Oromo or Tigrinya at C1 level is required.
  • Proficiency in at least two of the listed languages is considered a strong asset.
  • Proficiency in other ICRC operational languages—English, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic or Portuguese—is a strong asset.
  • Two years of professional experience are required.
  • Previous interpreting or translation experience is advantageous.
  • A strong commitment to humanitarian work is required.
  • Must be able to work under pressure in potentially dangerous environments.
  • An open-minded and adaptable approach is required.
  • Candidates must be in good health and complete a medical check-up before field departure.
  • A driving licence for manual-transmission vehicles is required.
  • Candidates must accept unaccompanied postings for the first two missions, with each lasting at least 12 months, or a total of 24 months.
  • University education or a degree in interpretation or translation is advantageous but not required.
  • Consistent with ICRC neutrality, personnel are not assigned to countries of which they are nationals.
