Senior/Executive Director, Oncology Reverse Translation

Lead reverse-translation research at Johnson & Johnson, converting clinical observations into actionable hypotheses for cancer drug development. Build teams, platforms, and strategies that strengthen the oncology pipeline.

Description

  • Direct independent studies addressing high-priority mechanistic questions across oncology.
  • Set priorities across disease-focused and mechanism-focused research, including shelved programs.
  • Translate research findings into next-generation hypotheses and combination strategies with Discovery.
  • Address active mechanistic questions from translational research leads across solid and hematologic cancers.
  • Lead laboratory investigations into program efficacy, failure, and resistance.
  • Design and evaluate combination approaches to increase benefit and overcome resistance.
  • Establish and operate the laboratory while bringing disease-area program scientists together under unified leadership.
  • Oversee omics, functional and perturbation biology, in vitro and in vivo studies, and organoid platforms.
  • Contribute to translational research leadership and organization-wide scientific strategy.
  • Connect reverse translation with Discovery as the scientific liaison.
  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs and Commercial on portfolio and lifecycle priorities.
  • Advance mechanism-focused translational publications, including the Mechanism Series.
  • Mentor scientists and foster rigorous, open scientific debate.
  • Evaluate team performance by its influence on program and portfolio decisions.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in cancer biology, molecular biology, immunology, pharmacology, or a related discipline, such as a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD.
  • At least 10 years of oncology discovery or translational research experience for Senior Director roles, or 12 years for Executive Director roles, including hands-on laboratory leadership.
  • Broad expertise in mechanisms and modes of resistance, with demonstrated success converting clinical observations into testable laboratory hypotheses.
  • Experience building and managing wet-lab teams and operating omics and functional-characterization platforms.
  • Ability to work effectively between Discovery and Translational Research in a matrix spanning multiple disease areas.
  • Strong publication record as a first or senior author, together with clear scientific communication skills.
  • Preferred: expertise in multiomics, perturbation biology, organoid models, and computational data integration.
  • Preferred: experience extracting portfolio-relevant insights from shelved programs.
  • Preferred: demonstrated ability to design combination and resistance-reversal strategies across modalities.
  • Preferred: experience collaborating with Medical Affairs and Commercial on lifecycle-focused science.
