Product Engineering Manager – Quito (Hybrid)

Lead software teams of 8–10 people at Stack Builders, a software consultancy in Quito. Own delivery, product outcomes, people development, client collaboration, and AI-enabled engineering practices.

Description

  • Lead approximately three to four small client teams, generally comprising two to four people each and totaling about 8–10 engineers.
  • Conduct regular 1:1s, document assessments and development plans, and define transparent promotion standards.
  • Clarify expectations, evaluation methods, decision ownership, and company direction for engineers.
  • Resolve concerns, assign owners to outstanding issues, escalate when needed, and follow through to closure.
  • Recommend project training budgets, compensation adjustments, and promotions, and communicate the rationale behind decisions.
  • Celebrate strong performance and connect individual contributions to company values and mission.
  • Maintain a high-quality onboarding experience for direct reports and contribute to engineering recruitment.
  • Serve as Senior Technical Lead when the project and required technical depth call for it.
  • Define feature areas, acceptance criteria, milestones, scope, and margin when Stack Builders owns the product outcome.
  • Coordinate team priorities with client product owners when the client directs the product.
  • Give developers ownership of product areas and share refinement responsibilities with business analysts when relevant.
  • Manage client communication rhythms, raise difficult news promptly, and route commercial matters to the commercial owner.
  • Require appropriate evidence of correctness before considering work complete.
  • Use AI tools every day, direct advanced models and agents, and assess the quality of their results.
  • Maintain each project’s AI working agreement, including usage, intake, adversarial review, automated evaluation, security, and rollback practices.
  • Support colleagues in adopting AI through pairing, experimentation, and hands-on practice.
  • Keep leadership informed about planned actions and risks while maintaining an up-to-date view of team skills, capacity, and readiness.
  • Report to the CTO and work closely with the Head of Engineering, Head of Client Services, HR, and the AI core group.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience managing software engineers or delivery teams, including a minimum of 1 year focused primarily on people management.
  • Experience addressing performance concerns, supporting promotion cases, and handling difficult conversations thoughtfully.
  • Experience owning product delivery for client software projects, including scope, schedule, and outcomes; fixed-price or outcome-based delivery experience is preferred.
  • Hands-on daily use of AI tools in software development, with knowledge of specification, evaluation, review, and guardrails.
  • Solid understanding of the software development lifecycle.
  • Sound client-facing judgment, including the ability to communicate difficult realities, protect scope, and deliver commitments.
  • Professional written and spoken Spanish and English at C1 level or equivalent.
  • Residence in Quito and availability to work from the office two days per week.
  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline.
  • English-language CV attached.
  • Acceptance of the Ecuador Privacy Notice is required for consideration.
  • Ability to work with teams in Ecuador and the United States, as well as clients in the United States and other countries.
