Senior Information Architect and UX Designer

Lead information architecture, user research, and accessible product design for a Veterans Affairs digital portal. Collaborate with government stakeholders and product teams to improve Veteran services.

Description

  • Own and advance the portal’s information architecture, covering navigation, site maps, page hierarchy, labeling, taxonomy, and user flows
  • Lead information architecture initiatives for high-traffic pages, features, and cross-portal programs
  • Assess the broader user experience implications of information architecture changes
  • Coordinate with external teams to align portal architecture with enterprise standards and connected digital experiences
  • Plan and conduct usability testing, tree testing, card sorting, generative research, and other user research activities
  • Combine qualitative and quantitative inputs from research, analytics, surveys, feedback, and related sources
  • Develop and maintain site maps, user flows, wireframes, concepts, and prototypes
  • Turn complex user, content, and business requirements into clear, intuitive experiences
  • Present research insights, design rationale, and recommendations to government stakeholders and product teams
  • Include people with disabilities in research and apply Section 508 and WCAG accessibility principles
  • Deliver design work within an established design system, from early concepts through high-fidelity prototypes
  • Develop collaborative relationships across design, product, engineering, program leadership, government stakeholders, and external teams
  • Work effectively through ambiguity, changing requirements, and complex stakeholder environments
  • Surface design, research, and delivery risks, communicate them early, and recommend mitigations
  • Coach and mentor colleagues through practical feedback, knowledge sharing, and collaborative design work
  • Contribute to hiring by reviewing candidate exercises and joining panel interviews

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree plus at least seven years of relevant professional experience
  • Relevant professional experience may be accepted in place of formal education
  • Proven experience conducting and applying user research for digital products or services
  • Experience planning, executing, and synthesizing qualitative and quantitative research
  • At least two years focused on information architecture or comparable responsibilities, with a portfolio showing site maps, navigation structures, user flows, taxonomy, and wireframes
  • Experience designing for a large, complex, content-rich website, application, or digital portal
  • Experience working within an established design system
  • Strong ability to turn research, analytics, user needs, and complex requirements into actionable design recommendations
  • Experience presenting to senior clients or stakeholders and explaining design decisions clearly
  • Experience mentoring teammates or providing design direction
  • Proficiency with modern design and collaboration tools, including Figma, Miro, or comparable platforms
  • Knowledge of accessible and inclusive design practices
  • Ability to obtain and retain a Public Trust clearance
  • Preferred: experience contributing to federal government digital services or modernization programs
  • Preferred: experience designing healthcare, benefits, patient-facing, or other complex service-oriented digital experiences
  • Preferred: experience with large-scale portals, content ecosystems, or complex navigation structures
  • Preferred: experience using information architecture research methods and tools such as tree testing and card sorting
  • Preferred: experience applying web analytics or other quantitative data to UX and information architecture decisions
  • Preferred: familiarity with Section 508 and WCAG accessibility standards
  • Preferred: experience conducting research within government review, approval, recruitment, or participant-management processes
