Senior Director, Oncology Reverse Translation

Lead oncology reverse-translation research at Johnson & Johnson, connecting clinical observations with disease biology, therapeutic resistance, discovery, and pipeline strategy. Direct laboratory programs and scientific teams across solid and hematologic cancers.

Description

  • Lead independent studies addressing high-priority mechanistic questions across oncology
  • Set priorities across disease-focused, cross-MOA, MOA-focused, cross-disease, and shelved-program research
  • Translate findings into next-generation hypotheses and combination strategies that support Discovery pipeline growth
  • Address active mechanistic questions raised by translational research leads across solid and hematologic indications
  • Direct laboratory research into program efficacy, failure, and resistance development
  • Design and evaluate combination approaches to increase treatment benefit and counter resistance
  • Establish and operate the laboratory while bringing disease-area scientists together under unified leadership
  • Oversee omics, functional and perturbation biology, in vitro and in vivo studies, and organoid platforms
  • Participate in the Core Senior Leadership Team for Translational Research and help shape organization-wide scientific strategy
  • Act as the scientific connection between reverse translation and Discovery
  • Partner with Medical Affairs and Commercial on lifecycle and portfolio priorities
  • Lead mechanism-focused translational research publications, including the Mechanism Series
  • Mentor scientists and foster rigorous, open scientific debate
  • Evaluate team performance by its influence on program and portfolio decisions

Requirements

  • Doctorate in cancer biology, molecular biology, immunology, pharmacology, or a related discipline, such as a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD
  • At least 10 years of experience for Senior Director consideration or 12 years for Executive Director consideration in oncology discovery or translational research, including direct laboratory leadership
  • Broad expertise in mechanisms and mechanisms of resistance, with demonstrated success converting clinical observations into testable laboratory hypotheses
  • Experience building and managing wet-lab teams and operating omics and functional-characterization platforms
  • Ability to work effectively at the Discovery–Translational Research interface within a matrix spanning multiple disease areas
  • Strong publication history, including first- or last-author papers, combined with clear scientific communication
  • Preferred: expertise in multiomics, perturbation biology, organoid models, and computational data integration
  • Preferred: experience extracting portfolio-relevant insights from shelved programs
  • Preferred: record of developing combination and resistance-reversal strategies across modalities
  • Preferred: experience collaborating with Medical Affairs and Commercial on lifecycle-focused science
