Equipment Engineer - OTTAVA Robotic Surgery Platform, Santa Clara Onsite

Manage, qualify, troubleshoot, and improve manufacturing and test equipment supporting Johnson & Johnson’s OTTAVA robotic surgery platform. The role focuses on regulated production assets, equipment performance, reliability, and compliance.

Description

  • Manage assigned manufacturing and test equipment from specification and selection through design review, FAT/SAT, installation, commissioning, qualification, release, maintenance, modification, and retirement.
  • Prepare or support URS/FRS documents, risk assessments, engineering drawings, maintenance strategies, spare-parts plans, calibration requirements, work instructions, change records, and validation protocols and reports.
  • Diagnose electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, robotic, controls, software-interface, and computer-related equipment failures while protecting personnel, product quality, data integrity, and the validated state.
  • Track equipment availability and uptime, evaluate downtime events, MTBF, MTTR, work-order history, repeat failures, and response effectiveness, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Investigate performance losses such as slow cycles, micro-stops, jams, intermittent faults, and reduced operating rates.
  • Evaluate quality losses involving equipment-related defects, rework, false failures, measurement-system problems, and calibration drift.
  • Apply structured problem-solving methods, including 5 Whys, fault-tree analysis, fishbone diagrams, FMEA, and data trending, to prevent recurring failures and confirm corrective-action effectiveness.
  • Maintain accurate CMMS work orders and asset records, using maintenance history to optimize preventive-maintenance tasks, frequencies, spare parts, and equipment readiness.
  • Coordinate suppliers and technicians, support audits and inspections, and train users in safe, compliant equipment operation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Manufacturing, Controls, Biomedical Engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent relevant experience may be accepted under company requirements.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in equipment, automation, maintenance, manufacturing, or test engineering within medical devices, robotics, life sciences, semiconductors, aerospace, or another regulated industry.
  • Hands-on experience with electromechanical equipment, automated test systems, robotics, controls, instrumentation, pneumatics, sensors, calibration, or custom fixtures.
  • Practical knowledge of GMP, design controls, controlled documentation, change control, deviation and nonconformance processes, and equipment qualification principles.
  • Experience analyzing equipment data, downtime records, yield or first-pass results, and maintenance history to identify OEE losses and improvement opportunities.
  • Understanding of OEE Availability, Performance, and Quality components, including the operational data required to calculate and interpret them.
  • Systematic troubleshooting skills and the ability to make safe decisions under production pressure.
  • Ability to interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, CAD drawings, technical specifications, PLC and controls information, and validation protocols.
  • Proficiency with CMMS platforms, technical writing, controlled documentation, and change-control execution.
  • Effective cross-functional communication with Manufacturing, Quality, R&D, Validation, EHS, Facilities, IT/OT, technicians, and suppliers.

Benefits

  • Inclusive workplace environment.
  • Equal employment opportunity.
  • Interview accommodations are available for applicants with disabilities.
