Hausa Interpreter

Support confidential humanitarian communication in Hausa and English for ICRC delegates, authorities, and conflict-affected communities in Nigeria. Interpret and translate for detention, family-reunification, protection, and related field activities.

Description

  • Interpret orally between Russian and English during confidential interviews with people deprived of liberty
  • Interpret ICRC institutional briefings and dialogue with authorities
  • Support family-link activities, including Red Cross message delivery, family tracing, and visits to detainees’ families
  • Translate Russian-language newspapers, correspondence, and other materials into written English
  • Assess and report on detention conditions, security, and other matters related to the ICRC mandate
  • Assist with additional protection activities as required
  • Engage with authorities, other organizations, beneficiaries, and colleagues across departments
  • Build operational contact networks when needed

Requirements

  • C1-level English proficiency is required
  • C1-level Hausa proficiency is required
  • Proficiency in another ICRC operational language—French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, or Portuguese—is a strong advantage
  • At least two years of professional experience
  • Prior interpreting or translation experience is advantageous
  • Strong commitment to humanitarian work
  • Ability to work under pressure in potentially dangerous environments
  • Open-minded, flexible, and adaptable
  • Good health and willingness to complete a medical examination before field deployment
  • Valid licence to drive manual-transmission vehicles
  • Willingness to accept unaccompanied postings for the first two missions, each lasting at least 12 months, or totaling 24 months
  • University-level education or a degree in interpreting or translation is advantageous
