Fula, Fulani and Peul Interpreter - ICRC, Switzerland

Support confidential humanitarian communication for the International Committee of the Red Cross through Fula, Fulani, and Peul interpretation and translation. Contribute to detainee protection, family-reunification work, and field operations across West Africa.

Description

  • Provide oral interpretation between Fula, Fulani, Peul, and French
  • Interpret confidential interviews with people deprived of liberty
  • Support ICRC communications and dialogue with authorities
  • Interpret family-link activities, including Red Cross message delivery, family tracing, and visits to detainees’ families
  • Translate Fula, Fulani, and Peul materials, including newspaper articles and correspondence, into French
  • Assess and report on detention conditions, security, and other matters within the ICRC mandate
  • Assist with additional protection activities as required
  • Engage with authorities, other organizations, beneficiaries, and staff across departments
  • Build operational contact networks when needed
  • Serve on a mobile global deployment roster across West African contexts

Requirements

  • Demonstrated C1-level proficiency in French
  • Demonstrated C1-level proficiency in Fula, Fulani, or Peul
  • Additional proficiency in ICRC operational languages, including English, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, or Portuguese, is an asset
  • Hausa proficiency is an asset
  • At least two years of professional experience
  • Prior interpreting or translating experience is advantageous
  • Strong commitment to humanitarian work
  • Ability to perform under pressure in potentially dangerous environments
  • Open-minded, adaptable, and flexible
  • Good health and willingness to complete a medical examination before field deployment
  • Valid driving licence for manual-transmission vehicles
  • Willingness to accept unaccompanied postings for the first two missions, each lasting at least 12 months, or 24 months in total
  • Under ICRC neutrality rules, personnel are not assigned to countries of their nationality
  • University-level education or a degree in interpretation or translation is advantageous
