Mila – Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute is a Montreal-based research and training community focused on advancing machine learning and artificial intelligence. Founded by Yoshua Bengio and connected with Quebec universities, Mila brings together more than 1,400 researchers working across language and image processing, robotics, AI for science and health, responsible AI, and environmental and energy applications. AI Safety Research Intern — Montréal (Hybrid)

Join Mila’s AI Safety Studio to develop public-safety guardrails, benchmarks, and model evaluation methods. Collaborate with researchers, product managers, and compute teams on applied machine-learning research in Montréal.

Description

  • Advance machine-learning research by working with Mila researchers and the AI Safety Studio.
  • Design and implement safety guardrails for public-safety applications.
  • Build dynamic benchmarks, red-teaming simulations, harm-detection safeguards, and automated evaluation methods.
  • Partner with the Mila compute cluster team to use computing infrastructure efficiently.
  • Produce thorough internal technical documentation.
  • Document the Mila Safety Studio’s work and prepare a scientific manuscript.
  • Work with product managers to define requirements for experimental design.
  • Help researchers select, assess, and integrate suitable AI technologies.
  • Find applied research opportunities based on prototypes and user feedback.
  • Improve research, model-training, and inference workflows.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated AI research experience, including multiple publications at major conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, or ICLR.
  • Strong scientific curiosity about applied AI safety research.
  • Excellent communication skills for explaining complex scientific concepts to audiences with varied technical backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience with agile software development and product management.
  • PhD in computer science, data science, or a related discipline.
  • Advanced Python proficiency.
