Staff Software Engineer, AI – Hybrid

Lead production AI and backend platform engineering for Thomson Reuters’ audit confirmation product, using C#/.NET, Python, LLMs, agents, retrieval, and distributed systems.

Description

  • Design, build, and deliver production backend and platform services with C#/.NET, PostgreSQL, AWS, microservices, and distributed-system patterns
  • Develop production AI/ML capabilities in Python, including LLM integrations, agents, orchestration, retrieval, and multi-step workflows
  • Drive hands-on AI engineering initiatives across product and infrastructure
  • Create and advance AI orchestration with routing, tool calling, MCP servers, multi-step workflows, safety controls, guardrails, evaluation, and resilient third-party LLM error handling
  • Design dependable, scalable, high-throughput distributed systems and AI workloads
  • Apply caching, queuing, rate limiting, model failover, observability, resilience, and cost and performance optimization
  • Build retrieval and data capabilities with document search, vector stores, embeddings, semantic search, and indexing strategies
  • Define technical direction and shape engineering standards
  • Mentor engineers while continuing to design, code, build, and ship production systems
  • Collaborate with Principal Engineers and cross-functional engineering, product, design, user experience, research, and machine learning teams
  • Create MCP servers and agent-based capabilities
  • Develop dependable, scalable AI infrastructure

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
  • At least 7 years of progressive software engineering experience
  • Recent, substantial hands-on experience developing production software with C#/.NET
  • Experience creating backend services and APIs with C#/.NET and ASP.NET Core or comparable technologies
  • Hands-on Python experience developing AI/ML systems
  • Demonstrated experience building and releasing AI/ML features to production
  • Experience with LLM applications, AI agents, retrieval/RAG, orchestration, or similar AI-native capabilities
  • Background in platform and distributed-systems engineering
  • Experience with microservices, system integration, data modeling, REST or GraphQL APIs, relational databases, observability, resilience, scalability, and performance optimization
  • Experience implementing AI safety controls, guardrails, evaluation, reliability, and production operations
  • Experience leading complex engineering initiatives through deployment, rollout, and sustained production operation
  • Ability to serve as a hands-on Staff-level technical leader
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Professional production AI delivery experience is required; personal projects, coursework, experimentation, and proof-of-concept work alone are insufficient
  • Preferred experience includes OpenAI or Anthropic LLM APIs, vector databases, embeddings, semantic search, custom retrieval pipelines, AI evaluation, actor-model architectures, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Angular, TypeScript, and regulated industries
