Staff Data Scientist, AI/ML — Remote in Wisconsin

Lead advanced AI/ML, LLM evaluation, and responsible-AI initiatives for Kohl’s retail business. Apply data science to improve decision-making, innovation, and measurable business outcomes.

Description

  • Use data and insights to guide decisions, set goals, and identify levers for balanced team objectives
  • Lead data science projects from problem definition through model deployment
  • Oversee experiments designed to answer targeted business questions
  • Identify opportunities to improve key business metrics and lead those improvements
  • Convert data science results into business outcomes and measurable value
  • Build business-partner relationships that support cross-functional alignment and adoption of data science capabilities
  • Mentor and support junior data scientists
  • Track data science and technology developments and identify opportunities to apply them at Kohl’s
  • Create prescriptive AI/ML solutions, including foundation models and predictive systems
  • Develop quantitative evaluation frameworks for LLMs, SLMs, and multi-agent systems
  • Apply responsible-AI methods, including bias detection, fairness constraints, data contracts, and model-risk controls
  • Connect enterprise knowledge graphs and semantic layers to RAG pipelines and vector databases or search systems
  • Monitor production inference data for concept drift, data degradation, and model decay

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of experience developing, evaluating, or applying modern AI/ML solutions such as LLMs, RAG, optimization, or causal methods, as appropriate to the business problem
  • At least 6 years of demonstrated knowledge of AI evaluation, responsible-AI practices, and bias or risk mitigation
  • At least 6 years of experience assessing production GenAI and agentic systems with golden datasets, LLM-as-a-judge methods, guardrail hit-rate analysis, and response-failure analytics
  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, or a comparable quantitative field
  • At least 6 years of progressively complex data science experience, or 3 years with a master’s degree
  • Expertise in creating and deploying advanced algorithms using machine learning, statistical, and optimization methods
  • Expert proficiency with modern analytics tools, programming languages, and cloud platforms, including Python, R, Spark, SQL, and GCP
  • Strong problem-solving ability focused on product development
  • Experience designing rapid experiments and iterating quickly
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams through ambiguous technical challenges and deliver business impact
  • Preferred: Master’s degree and/or Ph.D.
  • Preferred: Experience in retail and logistics
  • Preferred: Experience in merchandising and/or supply chain management
  • Preferred: Experience developing digital and/or marketing models
