Data Scientist, Economic Crime Hub (Remote UK)

Develop statistical, machine learning and generative AI solutions for NatWest Group’s Economic Crime Hub. Help improve fraud detection, customer protection and decision-making efficiency across the UK banking business.

Description

  • Develop data science tools and methods that help prevent fraud and scams, reduce customer harm and financial loss, and improve fraud decision accuracy and efficiency
  • Partner with Fraud, Engineering and Data teams to identify and deliver opportunities supporting the bank’s strategic direction
  • Build data literacy among business stakeholders and help strengthen a data-driven culture
  • Apply statistical analysis, machine learning, generative AI and software engineering to create practical, responsible responses to fraud and scam challenges
  • Work with fraud stakeholders and customer teams to clarify needs, develop hypotheses and identify data-led solutions
  • Turn fraud and scam challenges into analytical questions with measurable outcomes
  • Create reusable pipelines, test changes and deploy scalable solutions within an Agile environment
  • Select, develop, train and evaluate machine learning models, fraud strategies and AI applications
  • Monitor internal and third-party fraud models for performance, data quality, drift and business impact
  • Analyse emerging fraud patterns, unusual alerts and missed fraud events, converting findings into operational improvements
  • Maintain supporting evidence for governance, audit and regulatory review

Requirements

  • A strong STEM academic background, such as Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or Computer Science
  • Experience applying statistical modelling and machine learning to fraud or other complex risk problems involving rare events
  • Ability to use data to address business problems from hypothesis development through resolution
  • Programming experience and a foundation in software engineering practices
  • Experience working with cloud applications and platforms
  • Ability to synthesise, translate and visualise data and insights for key stakeholders
  • Experience with model monitoring, model risk governance and documenting analytical decisions for review and challenge is desirable
  • Knowledge of how large language models and agentic AI can support fraud and scam analysis, including controls for managing application risks, is desirable
