AVP, Corporate Communications - San Antonio, TX (Hybrid)

Lead enterprise communications for USAA’s Human Resources, Finance, Technology, Risk, and Legal functions. Shape clear, trusted narratives for employees, leaders, and members around complex business priorities.

Description

  • Lead communications strategy across USAA’s Human Resources, Finance, Technology, Risk, and Legal functions.
  • Translate business priorities, member value, culture, mission, and leadership vision into compelling internal and external narratives.
  • Build employee understanding, engagement, trust, and advocacy.
  • Monitor emerging issues, industry developments, and reputational risks to create proactive communications plans.
  • Develop executive communications strategies that reinforce leadership credibility and trust.
  • Work with executive leaders to turn complex priorities into effective employee and member communications.
  • Promote strategic thinking, proactive storytelling, business partnership, communications excellence, disciplined processes, and rigor across the team.
  • Influence effectively within a matrixed organization and establish partnerships across corporate functions.
  • Recruit, develop, retain, coach, and manage a high-performing communications team.
  • Identify, assess, monitor, and control business risks in line with risk and compliance policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, or four additional years of relevant education and/or experience.
  • At least 10 years of progressive corporate communications experience advising senior management on internal and external communications and leading major communications programs.
  • At least 6 years of experience building, managing, or developing high-performing teams.
  • Experience working with key stakeholders, influencing decisions, and managing work toward strategic objectives.
  • Executive-level understanding of business operations, industry practices, and emerging trends.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to influence and connect related priorities.
  • The substance, confidence, and executive presence needed to work effectively with senior leaders across the organization.
  • Innovative, creative, and strategic approach to problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to build, lead, collaborate with, and motivate teams.
  • Must be based in San Antonio, Texas.
  • Must not require immigration support or visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Preferred: 15 or more years of progressive experience in corporate communications, executive communications, reputation management, strategic storytelling, employee communications, or related fields.
  • Preferred: Extensive experience advising enterprise functions such as Human Resources, Technology, Risk, and Legal.
  • Preferred: Experience leading communications during significant transformation, change, or reputationally sensitive situations.
  • Preferred: Exceptional executive presence and judgment when advising C-suite and senior functional leaders.
  • Preferred: Proactive, contemporary storytelling across earned, owned, social, executive, and employee channels.
  • Preferred: Track record of building and developing high-performing communications teams.
  • Preferred: U.S. military experience through military service or as a military spouse or domestic partner.
