Senior Staff Data Platform Engineer, Hybrid Canada

Lead Benevity’s AWS lakehouse, data pipelines, and governed data products as a Senior Staff Data Platform Engineer. Build scalable technology that supports companies and employees in taking social action.

Description

  • Provide hands-on technical leadership across the end-to-end data path
  • Design platform capabilities that help domain engineering teams move data from source to reporting
  • Integrate new sources and schema changes into streaming consumption pipelines
  • Advance data through medallion layers and define reporting data products
  • Work across streaming and batch pipelines, transformation models, lakehouse and catalog layers, and semantic layers
  • Lead the design and implementation of a medallion architecture on an AWS lakehouse
  • Operate and modernize warehouse environments while planning the transition between warehouse and lakehouse systems
  • Develop configuration-driven and metadata-driven pipelines
  • Register, document, and maintain discoverability for pipelines, datasets, and data products in DataHub
  • Create governed, versioned, and tested contracts for data products and semantic layers
  • Develop AI-assisted tools for pipeline configuration, models, contracts, testing, and documentation
  • Partner with Principal Architects on technical strategy and reusable architecture patterns
  • Work with product managers, staff developers, and stakeholders to turn business needs into technical specifications and data product designs
  • Apply cloud-native solution design to uphold security best practices across the technology stack
  • Produce technical documentation, architecture decisions, and implementation processes
  • Deliver proofs of concept that inform technical and product direction
  • Mentor developers and support a collaborative, inclusive team environment
  • Take part in architectural reviews to maintain quality, consistency, and alignment with the north star architecture

Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent professional experience
  • At least 8 years of experience developing scalable software, including lead responsibilities, software design ownership, and substantial work on data platforms and pipelines
  • At least 2 years leading technical work on scalable platforms, technology transformation, or modernization initiatives
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong foundations in software design
  • Experience with domain-driven design, loosely coupled systems, and decoupled event-driven services
  • Experience creating reusable abstractions and frameworks
  • Extensive hands-on data engineering experience across streaming and batch systems
  • Experience with Debezium, Kafka, and Flink, including schema evolution and delivery-guarantee trade-offs
  • Experience implementing lakehouse and medallion architectures with S3, Apache Iceberg, AWS Glue, Lake Formation, and dbt
  • Experience operating warehouse engines at scale and using declarative, asset-based orchestration such as Airflow
  • Experience with DataHub or a comparable metadata, catalog, and lineage platform
  • Experience enforcing data contracts and schema governance automatically in CI and at runtime
  • Experience establishing data quality, observability, and service levels for pipelines and data products
  • Experience developing data products and semantic layers
  • Experience with Looker or LookML; familiarity with dbt Semantic Layer or Cube is an asset
  • Experience defining consumer-oriented data products with contracts, versioning, and deprecation paths
  • Exposure to analytics and reporting delivery
  • Extensive experience with cloud-native infrastructure on AWS
  • Working familiarity with GCP, including BigQuery and Looker; Azure experience is a plus
  • Proficiency in Agile, Infrastructure as Code, DevSecOps, automated testing, and CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions or Jenkins
  • Experience with AI-led, specification-driven, and agentic development workflows such as Cursor
  • Demonstrated success delivering performant, scalable, and cost-effective products
  • Relevant cloud platform or technology certification is desirable
