Field Applications Engineer - Bolton, Ontario

Support the reliability of EnerSys battery-buffered DC fast chargers and energy storage systems in the field. Diagnose compatibility and performance issues, validate corrective actions, and use fleet data to improve charging operations.

Description

  • Maintain and enhance the reliability, availability, and performance of deployed battery-buffered DC fast-charging stations.
  • Collaborate with the EnerSys Service team to investigate and resolve operational issues.
  • Diagnose complex hardware, software, firmware, communications, networking, and system-level problems affecting charger operation.
  • Lead or contribute to root-cause investigations involving downtime, unexpected reboots, failed charging sessions, recurring faults, and reduced performance.
  • Conduct EV interoperability and compatibility testing across vehicle manufacturers, models, and charging implementations.
  • Evaluate charging protocols, system logs, telemetry, fault records, and session behavior to identify vehicle-to-charger compatibility problems.
  • Create software, scripts, diagnostic utilities, automated tests, and data-analysis tools that strengthen troubleshooting and system validation.
  • Reproduce field issues in controlled test environments and verify engineering fixes before deployment.
  • Work with Site Reliability Engineering to examine operational datasets and uncover reliability trends across the charging fleet.
  • Build metrics, dashboards, and analytical approaches for monitoring uptime, downtime, reboot frequency, recurring faults, charging success, and recovery performance.
  • Assess how software releases, hardware configurations, vehicle types, environmental conditions, and operational events affect reliability outcomes.
  • Convert field and fleet findings into practical engineering recommendations and well-defined problem statements for hardware and software teams.
  • Assist with deploying and validating corrective actions, then measure their post-release effectiveness.
  • Coordinate with electrical, mechanical, firmware, software, systems, test, operations, field service, and SRE teams to achieve permanent issue resolution.
  • Record investigations, root causes, corrective actions, test results, and lessons learned to support ongoing charging-platform improvements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechatronics, electrical, computer, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Working familiarity with Linux or Unix environments and programming languages such as C and C++.
  • Knowledge of electrical troubleshooting, including reading and interpreting wiring diagrams, schematics, and circuit diagrams.
  • Ability to gather, interpret, and analyze system logs, communication traces, diagnostic data, telemetry, and error codes during fault investigations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, including structured troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
  • Basic knowledge of high-voltage electrical systems and electrical safety practices.
  • Basic understanding of computer networking, including TCP/IP and IP-based communications.
  • Familiarity with industrial and IoT protocols such as Modbus and MQTT.
  • Understanding of embedded communication buses and protocols, including CAN, I²C, and SPI.
