Senior Specialty General Liability Underwriter (Remote)

Senior underwriter responsible for high-hazard product liability accounts at Hanover Insurance. The role combines technical underwriting, portfolio oversight, profitable growth, and agency relationship management.

Description

  • Identify, solicit, underwrite, and sell new and renewal accounts
  • Pursue profitable growth within unit appetite and growth objectives
  • Develop insurance solutions for challenging product liability exposures
  • Use advanced technical, sales, and analytical expertise to evaluate and manage risk
  • Apply internal and external data to individual account and portfolio decisions
  • Oversee an assigned book of technically complex business
  • Perform risk selection, exposure and hazard analysis and control, coverage review, and loss analysis
  • Follow established underwriting tools, disciplines, strategies, and guidelines
  • Evaluate pricing components and rating methods against account exposures
  • Determine key questions, operational scope, exposures, and controls from limited information
  • Document files thoroughly and communicate account decisions
  • Prepare rating instructions and proposals for agents
  • Manage portfolio objectives across premium, profitability, rate, retention, product mix, new business, and performance
  • Review financial reports and insurance performance metrics
  • Assess market conditions influencing pricing across books, regions, and countrywide operations
  • Prepare and evaluate underwriting decisions, requirements, appetite, status, and declinations
  • Source, qualify, pipeline, negotiate, and close strategically aligned accounts
  • Promote capabilities to agents and sustain agency relationships
  • Track state and territory issues, regulations, and market trends
  • Incorporate market and competitor intelligence into account decisions
  • Strengthen producer relationships to improve yield and retention
  • Find cross-selling opportunities across business lines and customer segments
  • Collaborate with business units to provide comprehensive insurance solutions
  • Present Hanover products and underwriting appetite to agents and customers
  • Use sales systems, tools, and established best practices
  • Incorporate Claims and Loss Control expertise into the sales process
  • Mentor underwriters and support team training

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience
  • Five to seven or more years of underwriting experience
  • Five to seven or more years building agency relationships that generate profitable new and renewal business
  • Experience with high-hazard product liability
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve problems while managing multiple concurrent priorities
  • Knowledge of complex risks, pricing, market trends, industry segments, coverages, and insurance products
  • Ability to adapt rapidly, influence others, and advocate for change
  • Informal leadership skills and willingness to mentor newer or less experienced underwriters
  • Strong communication and influencing skills with internal and external business partners
  • Sound judgment, negotiation skills, and business decision-making within assigned authority
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams
  • Ability to work remotely, in a hybrid arrangement, or onsite according to company business needs
