Cinematic Technical Animator — Unreal Engine (Remote, United States)

Side is seeking a remote Cinematic Technical Animator to develop Unreal Engine animation and narrative systems for a three-month contract supporting a narrative-driven first-person game.

Description

  • Create scalable pipelines, tools, and systems for cinematic and narrative content
  • Develop cinematic sequences with Level Sequences, Animation Montages, Animation Blueprints, and Blueprint scripting
  • Define workflows that connect gameplay systems with cinematic storytelling
  • Implement character animation in Unreal Engine, including runtime control and system integration
  • Apply visual scripting and animation systems to strengthen character performance, emotional fidelity, timing, and narrative impact
  • Investigate and resolve animation and cinematic issues directly in Unreal Engine
  • Collaborate with animation, narrative design, audio, lighting, and other creative disciplines
  • Align technical implementation with storytelling, pacing, and presentation objectives
  • Improve cinematic systems for performance, reliability, and scalability while enabling creative iteration

Requirements

  • At least two years of game development experience, including recent hands-on implementation work
  • Strong Unreal Engine 4 experience with Blueprints, visual scripting, animation systems, and cinematic workflows
  • Multidisciplinary experience in technical art or technical animation with strong animation skills, or design with strong art and animation skills
  • Practical experience implementing in-engine animation, including Animation Blueprints, Montages, Level Sequences, and character animation integration
  • Solid understanding of narrative timing, pacing, and cinematic storytelling
  • Strong investigative, debugging, and problem-solving abilities, with confidence diagnosing issues independently
  • Experience contributing to at least one shipped game, preferably one known for strong narrative or mission design
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across multiple disciplines
  • Enthusiasm for narrative-driven first-person shooters
  • Preferred experience includes building cinematic or narrative pipelines and tools, runtime character control and complex animation systems, performance and scalability optimization, and integrating animation, audio, lighting, and narrative systems
