Payroll Manager - Hybrid, North Carolina

Lead multi-state payroll operations, compliance, benefits administration, and audits for an organization with more than 1,000 employees. Supervise payroll staff and drive system and process improvements across multiple locations.

  • Manage biweekly and semimonthly payroll for more than 1,000 employees across multiple states and locations
  • Supervise, train, and mentor payroll team members, including reviewing their work before payroll is finalized
  • Provide final approval for payroll runs covering hours, earnings, deductions, garnishments, and tax withholdings
  • Create and maintain payroll schedules, processing calendars, and key deadlines
  • Investigate and resolve complex payroll discrepancies, issues, and employee pay questions
  • Oversee 401(k) and employee-benefit deductions, contributions, remittances, and reconciliations
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local wage, tax, withholding, reporting, and remittance requirements
  • Manage payroll tax registrations and updates when adding new states or locations
  • Prepare and review payroll journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations in partnership with Accounting and Finance
  • Coordinate payroll, workers’ compensation, unemployment, financial, and 401(k) audits
  • Keep payroll records complete and accurate
  • Administer the payroll platform and implement improvements to payroll processes
  • Collaborate with HRIS and IT on payroll, HR, benefits, and time-and-attendance integrations
  • Lead or contribute to payroll system implementations, upgrades, and conversions

Reikalavimai

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least five years of progressive payroll experience, including two or more years managing or supervising payroll
  • Experience running multi-state, multi-location payroll for more than 500 employees
  • Strong understanding of federal and state wage-and-hour laws, payroll tax rules, and compliance obligations
  • Proficiency with a leading payroll or HRIS platform
  • Experience managing 401(k) and employee benefits and assisting with related plan and financial audits
  • Advanced Excel capability, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and reconciliation modeling
  • Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent cross-functional communication skills across in-person, written, and email channels
  • Strong analytical ability, including interpreting large payroll datasets, identifying trends, finding root causes, and resolving discrepancies
  • Sound critical-thinking and decision-making skills
  • Ability to adapt and remain flexible in a fast-paced, growing, and changing environment
  • Strong leadership and organizational capabilities
  • Experience supporting rapid growth or multi-entity and acquisition environments
