Senior Specialty General Liability Underwriter

Senior underwriter responsible for high-hazard product liability accounts and profitable portfolio growth at The Hanover Insurance Group. The role covers complex commercial risks from initial identification and pricing through sales, renewal, and ongoing portfolio management.

Description

  • Identify, solicit, underwrite, and sell new and renewal accounts
  • Pursue profitable growth within unit appetite and established growth objectives
  • Develop insurance solutions for challenging product liability exposures
  • Use underwriting, sales, and analytical expertise to evaluate and manage risk
  • Combine internal and external data to guide account-level and portfolio-level risk decisions
  • Oversee an assigned book of technically complex business
  • Evaluate risk selection, exposures, hazards, coverage, pricing, rating, and loss performance
  • Maintain complete files and communicate the rationale behind account decisions
  • Prepare rating instructions and proposals for agency partners
  • Manage premium, profitability, rate, retention, product mix, new business, and overall portfolio performance goals
  • Review underwriting, rate, requirements, appetite, status, and declination data
  • Build a pipeline, negotiate terms, and close accounts aligned with strategic priorities
  • Strengthen agency and producer relationships while presenting company capabilities
  • Track state and territory developments, regulations, trends, competitors, and market conditions
  • Collaborate with business units, Claims, Loss Control, and Specialty teams
  • Present solutions and account information to agents and customers
  • Mentor developing and newly hired underwriters and support training initiatives

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience
  • At least 5–7 years of underwriting experience
  • At least 5–7 years building agency relationships that generate profitable new and renewal business
  • Experience underwriting high-hazard product liability risks
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and resolve problems while managing multiple concurrent priorities
  • Advanced knowledge of technical, sales, analytical, underwriting, pricing, and insurance products
  • Ability to adapt rapidly to change and influence stakeholders
  • Capacity to provide informal leadership and mentorship
  • Strong communication and relationship-management abilities
  • Effective judgment, negotiation, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team
  • Availability to work onsite when business needs require in-person meetings or training
  • Willingness to travel as business needs dictate
