Senior Manager, Software Engineering – Global Forwarding Technology | C.H. Robinson (Hybrid, United States)

Lead software engineering modernization for C.H. Robinson’s global freight-forwarding technology. Guide teams, roadmaps, integrations, automation, and AI initiatives across complex logistics operations.

Description

  • Direct the daily work of software engineering teams
  • Coach and mentor technical professionals
  • Collaborate with product, business, operations, and technology leaders on strategy and high-value delivery
  • Lead modernization and automation across Global Forwarding workflows, including pricing, rating, carrier contracts, shipment planning, booking, visibility, documentation, and operations
  • Advance initiatives from discovery through delivery and production deployment
  • Use automation, artificial intelligence, large language models, and agentic technologies to reduce manual effort and strengthen decision-making
  • Define AI-enabled workflow practices covering human oversight, evaluation, observability, security, governance, and guardrails
  • Create technology roadmaps connected to measurable business results
  • Set technical and organizational direction while maintaining system stability, scalability, reliability, and security
  • Recruit, hire, onboard, coach, develop, and retain engineering talent
  • Strengthen leadership capacity and succession planning
  • Administer annual merit programs for assigned teams
  • Address dependencies, blockers, conflicts, shifting priorities, escalated technical problems, and production incidents
  • Promote reuse of shared platforms, services, patterns, and automation capabilities
  • Set engineering standards for architecture, testing, observability, security, reliability, and software delivery
  • Report progress through presentations, scorecards, and business-outcome metrics
  • Present engineering strategy, progress, risks, and tradeoffs to senior executives
  • Keep teams aligned with quarterly commitments and service-level defect resolution
  • Lead organizational and technology transformation across globally distributed teams

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of progressively complex software engineering experience
  • At least 4 years leading and managing software engineering teams
  • Experience delivering business-critical software in complex enterprise settings
  • Experience directing software delivery in agile or product-led environments
  • Experience managing integrations, distributed systems, APIs, and connections between custom and commercial technologies
  • Experience guiding engineering teams through ambiguity, complex dependencies, and shifting priorities
  • Experience partnering with product, business, architecture, and operations leaders on strategy and execution
  • Experience presenting status, technical tradeoffs, risks, and strategy to senior leadership
  • Ability to link engineering investments and technical decisions to business outcomes
  • Demonstrated success developing engineers, technical leaders, and emerging people managers
  • Strong knowledge of contemporary software engineering, architecture, testing, reliability, security, and delivery practices
  • Bachelor’s degree, or at least 4 years of equivalent work experience plus a high school diploma or GED
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% domestically and internationally
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, Business, or a related discipline
  • Preferred: Experience with ERP, TMS, freight forwarding, supply chain management, transportation, or complex operational systems
  • Preferred: Experience using generative AI, large language models, intelligent automation, or agentic technologies
  • Preferred: Experience with cloud-native architecture and Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform
