Summer AI Research Intern, Embodied AI

Research machine learning, robotics, and multimodal models for autonomous driving at General Motors. Run experiments and collaborate with research and engineering teams in a hybrid internship based in Sunnyvale, California.

Description

  • Investigate machine learning, robotics, and autonomous driving through an applied research project.
  • Partner with researchers and engineers to shape hypotheses, plan experiments, train and assess models, interpret results, and share findings.
  • Define research problems and build prototypes for autonomous driving applications.
  • Plan and conduct experiments, ablation studies, and quantitative evaluations.
  • Train and benchmark models on large datasets using distributed computing infrastructure.
  • Study model behavior, failure cases, generalization, and performance tradeoffs.
  • Work with teams in perception, planning, robotics, controls, and systems engineering.
  • Contribute to technical discussions and, where appropriate, research documentation, publications, patents, or open-source projects.
  • Present findings to technical and cross-functional audiences.

Requirements

  • Pursuing or preparing to begin a Ph.D. in machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer science, robotics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Strong command of contemporary machine learning and deep learning methods.
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, or another machine learning framework.
  • Demonstrated AI or machine learning research experience through coursework, academic projects, publications, or equivalent work.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, including experience designing experiments and interpreting results.
  • Able to collaborate in a cross-functional, team-based environment.
  • Strong written, spoken, and presentation skills.
  • Available to work 40 hours per week throughout the internship.
  • Experience with transformers, large language models, vision-language models, vision-language-action models, diffusion models, or other generative architectures.
  • Experience with reinforcement learning, imitation learning, self-supervised learning, world models, multimodal learning, or temporal modeling.
  • Familiarity with autonomous vehicles, advanced driver assistance systems, robotics, or embodied AI.
  • Experience with large datasets, distributed training, high-performance computing, or model scaling.
  • Evidence of substantial technical contributions, such as first-authored publications, grants, fellowships, patents, or open-source work.
  • Experience with C++ or another systems programming language.
  • Plans to return to a degree program after the internship or co-op.
  • Expected to graduate between December 2027 and June 2028.
