Senior Software Engineer, ML Platforms (India Remote)
Build dependable machine-learning platforms for Oportun’s financial services products from India. Lead scalable ML infrastructure, production operations, and cross-functional technical initiatives.
Description
- Own the design, delivery, deployment, and operation of sophisticated platform capabilities across the machine-learning lifecycle
- Create scalable solutions for model serving, feature computation, data validation, workflow orchestration, monitoring, and production support
- Develop reusable platform components, engineering standards, and automation that strengthen ML system reliability, scalability, observability, and operational readiness
- Collaborate with Data Science, Product, Risk, Fraud, and Engineering to turn unclear business needs into effective technical solutions
- Drive major technical initiatives from conception through completion and lead investigations into complex production issues
- Define requirements, guide architecture, ship safely, evaluate outcomes, and deliver lasting corrective solutions
- Improve engineering excellence through code and design reviews, hands-on mentoring, pairing, and contributions to platform strategy
- Apply AI tools judiciously to reduce repetitive work and support faster, better decisions
Requirements
- At least five years of professional experience building and operating production software systems
- Advanced Python programming ability
- Strong command of API design, distributed systems, service architecture, testing, and core software-design principles
- Experience designing and operating dependable, scalable cloud-native or data-intensive systems
- Background in ML platforms, model serving, feature engineering, data platforms, MLOps, or related technologies
- Hands-on knowledge of SQL, databases, caching, and tracing data or requests across distributed systems
- Understanding of the ML lifecycle, including feature engineering, training, evaluation, deployment, serving, monitoring, and governance
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Git-based development, and production observability
- Ability to assess technical options and communicate recommendations, trade-offs, risks, and dependencies clearly
- Ability to mentor engineers, strengthen development practices, lead through technical influence, and connect engineering work with member, business, product, and operational outcomes
- Willingness to experiment with AI tools and continue learning
- Preferred experience with AWS, Databricks, MLflow, SageMaker, Spark or PySpark, Kafka, or streaming technologies
- Preferred experience building feature platforms, model-serving systems, workflow-orchestration platforms, or internal developer platforms
- Preferred knowledge of monitoring model, data, feature, latency, reliability, and cost metrics, plus experience handling sensitive data in regulated or financial-services settings
- Preferred experience with Java or another backend language alongside Python, and familiarity with AI tools such as ChatGPT or Copilot
