Residential Counselor, Developmental Disabilities – Vinfen Onsite

Support people with developmental disabilities in Vinfen’s Massachusetts residential programs. Promote independence, community participation, self-advocacy, and safe daily living.

Description

  • Deliver individual and group support in a residential program
  • Teach skills that build independence, quality of life, and self-advocacy
  • Keep the residential setting safe, secure, and clean
  • Help residents participate in their communities and build lasting friendships
  • Connect residents with community-based supports and resources
  • Organize recreational and social activities that encourage inclusion and emotional well-being
  • Help residents make choices and take part in decisions about their services and lives
  • Facilitate access to assistive technology and adaptive equipment
  • Support employment, volunteering, and other community engagement
  • Train and assist residents with rehabilitation and behavioral strategies, safety procedures, appointments, finances, daily living, shopping, meal preparation, cooking, and household tasks
  • Complete hands-on responsibilities required by individual support plans
  • Provide transportation when needed
  • Evaluate physical and emotional well-being and report changes to the supervisor
  • Track and safeguard resident funds
  • Maintain records, behavioral and academic data, progress notes, communication logs, incident reports, and activity schedules
  • Procure, store, administer, document, and dispose of medication according to MAP requirements and policy
  • Coordinate with program nurses, case managers, and the Visiting Nurses Association
  • Attend required training sessions and staff meetings
  • Follow applicable regulatory policies, procedures, and standards
  • Maintain household safety and complete housekeeping, snow removal, and trash disposal
  • Cover shifts at other homes or programs when assigned
  • Advocate for human rights and provide physical intervention or First Aid during emergencies
  • Report concerns to the Disabled Persons Protections Commission as required
  • Help develop, implement, and document treatment plans, ISP/PSTPs, and clinical programs
  • Complete other related duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Related experience or training of at least one year is encouraged
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Hold a valid driver’s license when employment begins
  • Maintain sufficient insurance coverage when driving a personal vehicle
  • Maintain a safe driving history and pass a driver screening background check
  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Have held a valid U.S. driver’s license for at least six months
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, and climb
  • Ability to lift at least 25 pounds with proper technique or with a two-person lift
  • Ability to use a computer, calculator, copier, and printer
  • Ability to sit, reach, climb stairs, and move through narrow hallways or spaces
  • Ability to help clients with activities of daily living
  • Ability to speak, hear, and communicate with clients, colleagues, and external representatives
  • Ability to use close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision and adjust focus
  • Obtain CPR certification within two weeks of hire
  • Obtain First Aid certification within two weeks of hire
  • Complete MAP requirements within 150 days of hire
  • Complete PBS Tier 1 requirements within 150 days of hire
  • Complete Safety Care requirements within 90 days of hire
  • Knowledge of advocacy, empowerment, self-advocacy, participatory planning, crisis response, communication approaches, physical personal management, and household management
  • Ability to work independently and within an interdisciplinary team
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Awareness of cultural, religious, racial, disability, and gender-related considerations
