Human Resources Generalist

Manage recruiting, temporary staff onboarding, benefits administration, employee programs, HR reporting and compliance. Join MHI Ship Repair & Services in an onsite role in Norfolk, Virginia.

Description

  • Lead hiring for permanent and temporary roles, from posting openings and sourcing candidates to screening, communication, and offers.
  • Help onboard temporary employees and address questions about onboarding, timekeeping, and related matters.
  • Reconcile benefit provider invoices and work with Finance and providers to resolve discrepancies.
  • Handle unemployment claims and responses.
  • Run employee referral, recognition, and engagement programs.
  • Coordinate random drug and alcohol testing, including requirements set by the Department of Transportation.
  • Create and maintain Excel reports and human resources metrics.
  • Help organize employee appreciation and recognition events.
  • Keep current on company policies, procedures, and employment laws, and answer employees’ HR questions.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential employee files and HRIS records.
  • Contribute to other HR activities and departmental projects as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or a related discipline, plus at least three years of generalist or comparable HR experience.
  • Equivalent education and relevant work experience may substitute for a degree.
  • PHR or SHRM-CP certification is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including preparing, maintaining, and analyzing HR reports and using advanced functions as needed.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Experience with ADP or a similar human resources information system.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities and clear communication with employees at all levels.
  • Well organized, detail oriented, and able to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism.
