Advanced Technical Designer, Unreal Engine 5 — Warner Bros. Games Montréal (Hybrid)

Warner Bros. Games Montréal is seeking an Advanced Technical Designer to build and refine interactive gameplay systems for AAA games. The role focuses on Unreal Engine 5 integration, performance optimization, prototyping, and technical design.

Description

  • Build, prototype, implement, and maintain interactive gameplay systems, technical content, and supporting platforms
  • Assess feasibility, integration quality, and performance across technical designs
  • Serve as a principal technical contributor on the Tech Design team
  • Lead complex technical design areas and shape feasibility, scope, and Blueprint conventions with Design and Production
  • Coach team members and resolve blockers involving content integration and performance
  • Configure and maintain game features, engines, editors, and proprietary Warner Bros. tools
  • Improve editor workflows for content placement, data layers, previewing, debugging, validation, and naming standards
  • Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot high-performance gameplay systems and content
  • Prototype and iterate on integrations to confirm feasibility, scope, and quality
  • Support scripted content with Level Design and verify gameplay-system integration in content scenarios
  • Partner with Level Design, Game Design, Art, VFX, Programming, and QA to define requirements, document setups, integrate changes, and resolve issues
  • Track cross-functional dependencies and coordinate with Production and partner disciplines
  • Contribute to technical reviews and gameplay milestone validation
  • Write technical design documents, architecture notes, and content integration guides
  • Keep current with technical and gameplay practices, champion best practices, and support continuous improvement in high-performance software

Requirements

  • At least eight years of technical design experience in the video game industry
  • Contributions to at least two AAA titles, including one released on console and PC
  • Experience developing large-scale console and PC games through the full production cycle, including post-launch DLC and title updates
  • Demonstrated optimization and debugging experience on PC and consoles
  • Ability to assess performance and recommend improvements using Blueprint reviews, profiling, World Partition, budgets, and streaming analysis
  • Advanced Unreal Engine 5 technical gameplay expertise, including Blueprints, gameplay tags, data layers, animation integration, State Trees, Ability System, AI configuration, spawning, gameplay conditions, EQS, interactions, cameras, and cinematics integration
  • Experience with Perforce, JIRA, and bug-tracking tools
  • Experience with a 3D DCC package such as Maya or 3ds Max is a strong asset
  • Ability to read C++ or experience with scripting or programming is a strong asset
  • Clear, concise, and transparent written and verbal communication with design and programming teams
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting ability
  • Ability to prioritize work, adjust deliverable quality to the development phase and milestone, and manage execution independently
  • Ability to advance ambiguous technical subjects in partnership with Design and Production
  • Ability to support less experienced team members and work with internal and external resources
