Underwriting Specialist, Small Commercial Lines

Underwrite and manage small commercial Technology accounts for The Hanover Insurance Group, including pricing, risk decisions, and portfolio performance. Build agency relationships and support profitable growth across Massachusetts and New York.

Description

  • Identify, solicit, underwrite, and sell new and renewal Technology accounts
  • Apply risk selection, hazard identification, coverage analysis, and loss analysis
  • Use underwriting tools and guidelines to support compliance and profitability
  • Evaluate pricing components, rating methods, exposures, financial information, and competitive positioning
  • Use targeted questioning to understand operations and exposures comprehensively
  • Document files thoroughly and communicate account decisions clearly
  • Follow catastrophe guidelines and uphold disciplined underwriting practices
  • Provide accurate rating instructions before proposals are generated
  • Underwrite and price Technology coverages, including products, professional, and cyber liability
  • Manage an assigned portfolio against premium, profitability, retention, industry mix, and new business objectives
  • Review financial reports and insurance performance metrics, including OBIEE data
  • Prepare and assess adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, and declinations
  • Identify, develop, negotiate, and close accounts aligned with Technology and branch strategies
  • Assess agency partners and communicate their market capabilities to agents
  • Stay current on state and territory regulations and market trends
  • Build relationships and secure commitments through consultation and negotiation
  • Find cross-selling opportunities and coordinate with other business units
  • Present Hanover products and underwriting appetite at the point of sale
  • Use Salesforce and other tools to execute sales activities
  • Present products and solutions to agents and customers
  • Partner with Claims, Risk Solutions, and Operations
  • Create and execute Territory Business Plans for agency partners

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience
  • Three to seven or more years of standard commercial lines underwriting experience
  • Experience handling accounts of $100,000 or more is preferred
  • Strong understanding of underwriting principles, pricing methodology, and risk assessment
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation abilities
  • Ability to advise internal and external stakeholders effectively
  • Sound judgment, effective negotiation skills, and informed business decision-making ability
  • Ability to learn quickly, adapt to change, and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced setting
  • Team-oriented approach that supports inclusion and respect for diverse perspectives
  • Strong prioritization, desk management, and deadline-management skills
  • Proficiency with underwriting systems and tools
  • Regular, predictable, and dependable attendance
  • Ability to work assigned schedules and communicate by phone, email, Teams, and in person as needed
