Technical UI Designer – Unreal Engine (Remote, North Carolina)

Build scalable, responsive Unreal Engine interfaces for an AAA game development partner. Develop MVVM-based UI, controller navigation, and performant cross-platform player experiences.

Description

  • Translate features and wireframes into well-scoped implementation tasks while surfacing dependencies and open questions early.
  • Develop and maintain Unreal Engine interfaces with UMG and Widget Blueprints.
  • Create interface behavior and interaction logic with Blueprint scripting.
  • Design reusable UI components that can adapt as product requirements and visual designs change.
  • Deliver data-driven interfaces with ViewModels, view bindings, and MVVM patterns alongside UI Engineering.
  • Contribute within established C++ UI architectures and follow data flow between gameplay systems and presentation layers.
  • Account for screen dimensions, safe areas, localization, accessibility, responsive scaling, and changing content.
  • Create controller-led navigation that also accommodates varied input methods and target platforms.
  • Evaluate UI performance and runtime or memory costs across UMG, Slate, C++, textures, and related systems.
  • Investigate UI hitches and partner with Engineering when issues require deeper technical analysis.
  • Coordinate feature development with UX, UI Art, Engineering, and Production.
  • Refine team workflows, pipelines, documentation, and implementation standards as the UI technology evolves.
  • Represent the player experience while balancing technical constraints and delivery needs.

Requirements

  • Professional experience implementing Unreal Engine and UMG interfaces.
  • Strong command of MVVM, ViewModels, data binding, and separating data from presentation, or comparable architectural approaches.
  • Working knowledge of C++ fundamentals and data types for collaboration within C++-based UI systems.
  • Advanced technical UI implementation ability with an understanding of UI architecture and component-based design.
  • Strong grasp of UI and UX principles, including layout, composition, hierarchy, interaction patterns, responsive behavior, and state management.
  • Ability to plan for localization, text overflow, dynamic content, scaling, changing data, and varied input methods.
  • Experience creating interfaces designed for controller navigation and other input methods.
  • Experience accounting for performance and runtime cost during UI implementation.
  • Clear cross-functional communication skills and experience partnering with Design, Art, Engineering, and Production.
  • Professional Unreal Engine experience; candidates should be ready to contribute without learning the engine on the job.
  • Experience shipping PC UI is highly relevant.
  • Experience working across console and/or mobile platforms is valuable.
  • Preferred: Experience with Unreal Insights.
  • Preferred: Experience shipping UI across multiple platforms.
  • Preferred: Experience with UI materials, animation, and motion.
  • Preferred: Experience using Figma or comparable prototyping tools.
