Senior AI Engineer, Agentic AI Platform — American Express (Hybrid)

Build American Express’s enterprise agentic AI platform as a senior engineer. Develop governed runtimes, distributed services, observability, and delivery automation for production AI agents.

Description

  • Design and deliver highly scalable components for the enterprise agentic AI platform
  • Lead complex technical initiatives from architecture through production operation
  • Build distributed services and APIs for agent execution and lifecycle management
  • Integrate major AI model ecosystems and managed agent platforms
  • Create shared abstractions for models, agents, tools, runtimes, and providers
  • Design identity, permissions, policy enforcement, and governance systems for agents
  • Develop observability, evaluation, and experimentation capabilities for production AI
  • Create SDKs, developer tools, and automation that improve engineering productivity
  • Build dependable CI/CD and release workflows for AI agents and related artifacts
  • Define approaches to resilience, scalability, performance, security, and cost efficiency
  • Assess emerging agent frameworks, protocols, models, and infrastructure for enterprise use
  • Collaborate with product, architecture, security, risk, infrastructure, and application engineering teams

Requirements

  • Demonstrated software engineering experience building production systems with Python, Java, Go, or TypeScript
  • Strong knowledge of generative AI, LLMs, agent architectures, tool and function calling, retrieval, context management, and agent orchestration
  • Experience developing production applications or platforms with major model providers or AI platforms
  • Experience with Kubernetes, containers, microservices, distributed systems, and cloud-native architecture
  • Experience designing production APIs and event-driven or asynchronous systems
  • Strong knowledge of modern cloud infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code practices
  • Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, production observability, and software delivery practices
  • Strong grounding in security fundamentals, including identity, authentication, authorization, secrets, and least-privilege access
  • Ability to resolve ambiguous technical challenges and turn emerging technologies into dependable production systems
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work across engineering, architecture, product, security, and governance teams
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Preferred experience includes LangGraph, Semantic Kernel, Google ADK, OpenAI Agents SDK, MCP, A2A, multi-agent systems, Kubernetes operators or controllers, service meshes, agent and model gateways, vector databases, retrieval systems, embeddings, LLM and agent evaluation frameworks, OpenTelemetry, Langfuse, policy engines, AI security, platform engineering, developer portals, enterprise service catalogs, and large-scale distributed systems in highly regulated environments
