Principal Data Scientist, Small Business Credit Risk

Lead data science and machine learning initiatives for small-business credit risk and lending analytics at Navy Federal Credit Union. Develop predictive models and insights that support underwriting, pricing, portfolio management, and member lending decisions.

Description

  • Lead data science, machine learning, and advanced analytics strategy for small-business lending
  • Analyze small-business credit, application, financial statement, cash flow, transaction, and performance data
  • Support underwriting, risk segmentation, pricing, portfolio management, and the full member lending experience
  • Partner with senior leaders and cross-functional teams to uncover high-impact opportunities
  • Help shape product and credit strategies
  • Convert complex data into scalable analytical solutions, actionable insights, and measurable business results
  • Design, build, and assess complex predictive models and advanced algorithms
  • Evaluate hypotheses and models, interpret results, and formulate recommendations
  • Create and program complex software, algorithms, and automated processes
  • Develop innovative approaches through exploratory analysis of complex, high-dimensional datasets
  • Convert analytical results into charts, tables, and other decision-support formats
  • Document analyses and communicate findings to varied stakeholder groups
  • Direct moderate to large-scale projects and initiatives
  • Promote best practices and ethical AI
  • Collaborate with senior management on complex matters
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced staff
  • Expand analytical capabilities through descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive modeling

Requirements

  • At least six years of experience with the required competencies
  • Comprehensive knowledge and mastery of the relevant specialization
  • Knowledge of statistics, machine learning, data mining, auditing, aggregation, reconciliation, and visualization
  • Knowledge of programming, data modeling, simulation, and advanced mathematics
  • Proficiency in SQL, R, Python, Hadoop, SAS, SPSS, Scala, and AWS
  • Experience executing the model lifecycle
  • Technical writing capability
  • Strong data storytelling and technical presentation skills
  • Research capability
  • Advanced understanding of procedures, instructions, and validation methods
  • Experience developing models
  • Strong critical-thinking and problem-solving ability
  • Ability to exercise independent and sound judgment
  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, or a comparable quantitative field
  • Ability to follow Navy Federal policies, procedures, and Bank Secrecy Act regulations
  • Preferred: Master’s or doctoral degree in a quantitative discipline
  • Preferred: Experience applying data science, machine learning, or advanced analytics to small-business banking, commercial lending, or small-business lending strategies
  • Preferred: Experience designing analytical solutions across the lending lifecycle
  • Preferred: Strong knowledge of small-business credit risk, cash-flow underwriting, commercial credit data, financial statements, transaction data, and alternative data sources
  • Preferred: Ability to influence senior leaders and collaborate across lending products, credit risk, underwriting, operations, and model risk
