Senior Publications Specialist II, Magazine Editor

Lead production of Public Roads magazine and related federal publications, coordinating editorial schedules, reviews, and stakeholder communications. This remote U.S. role manages content from intake through publication.

Description

  • Oversee the full production cycle for Public Roads magazine and related publications.
  • Create and maintain editorial calendars, production schedules, and publication deadlines.
  • Coordinate concurrent publication projects and overlapping production cycles.
  • Act as the main point of contact for authors, editors, technical reviewers, designers, web teams, and government stakeholders.
  • Manage article intake, review, approval, tracking, and publication.
  • Maintain version control and oversee publication workflows from start to finish.
  • Ensure content meets federal publishing rules, editorial standards, branding guidance, and accessibility requirements.
  • Assist with editorial review, proofreading, and quality checks.
  • Arrange technical, legal, public affairs, and management reviews as needed.
  • Monitor milestones and address production delays or workflow issues early.
  • Help create promotional materials and support publication outreach.
  • Maintain publication archives, records, production documentation, and stakeholder contact lists.
  • Provide government stakeholders with status reports and production updates.
  • Propose improvements to publishing processes, workflows, and quality controls.

Requirements

  • Be eligible to obtain and maintain required USDOT facility and network access.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, publishing, or a related field.
  • Have at least seven years of progressively responsible experience in publication management, editorial operations, or magazine production.
  • Have managed recurring publications such as magazines, journals, newsletters, or comparable communications products.
  • Have coordinated complex editorial review and approval processes.
  • Bring strong project management and organizational abilities.
  • Have managed publication schedules, production timelines, and several deliverables at once.
  • Demonstrate strong writing, editing, proofreading, and communication skills.
  • Have experience working with cross-functional teams and multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Be able to prioritize work in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Be proficient with Microsoft Office and publication management tools.
  • Preferred: experience managing technical, scientific, research, or government publications.
  • Preferred: experience with FHWA, USDOT, or another federal civilian agency’s publications.
  • Preferred: experience with Adobe InDesign, Acrobat, or similar production tools.
