HMH
HMH develops curriculum, assessment, and learning resources for K–12 education. Its programs span literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, and social-emotional learning, alongside professional development that helps educators strengthen instructional practice and support student learning.

Remote Machine Learning Engineer at HMH

Build and operate explainable student assessment models on AWS SageMaker. Help HMH improve K–12 learning outcomes through production machine learning systems.

Apraksts

  • Manage models from data preparation through training, validation, deployment, monitoring, and iteration.
  • Explore and validate data before and after modeling, then document findings.
  • Run Python training jobs and pipelines in AWS SageMaker.
  • Track experiments with MLflow and evaluate models on held-out cohorts.
  • Register, promote, and deploy model versions with traceable data, code, and model lineage.
  • Operate real-time endpoints and batch scoring with a feature store and Snowflake.
  • Optimize latency, cost, and capacity.
  • Monitor prediction quality, failure rates, and drift using dashboards and alerts.
  • Lead monthly production health reviews and blameless postmortems.
  • Recommend model updates based on production evidence and contribute to design RFCs.
  • Help analyst, product, and data teams interpret and use model outputs.
  • Adapt models across subjects and curricula without maintaining separate code forks.
  • Rescore large student populations while keeping live services running.
  • Run model versions in parallel and retire them safely.
  • Improve training and serving efficiency while preserving model behavior.
  • Collaborate on a stream-aligned team with a senior or staff engineer.

Prasības

  • Demonstrated experience delivering models or machine learning systems used by others.
  • For IC4, typically at least three years of hands-on experience, or a doctorate with relevant practical experience.
  • A master’s or PhD in a quantitative discipline, such as psychometrics, is expected.
  • Write idiomatic, typed, tested Python.
  • Experience with CI/CD, GitHub Actions, and infrastructure managed with Terraform.
  • Strong SQL skills.
  • A solid grounding in statistics, including posterior and likelihood concepts and calibration plots.
  • Strong exploratory data analysis skills.
  • Excellent technical writing skills.
  • Working knowledge of AWS, ideally SageMaker.
  • Working knowledge of an experiment tracking tool such as MLflow.
  • Ability to judge when work is ready to ship and support that judgment with evidence.
  • Helpful experience includes psychometrics or educational measurement; cognitive diagnostic models or Bayesian networks; probabilistic programming such as Stan or PyMC; R; Snowflake and dbt; Terraform; GitHub Actions; knowledge graphs or ontologies; and K–12 assessment data.

Priekšrocības

  • Annual salary range of $110,000 to $115,000.
  • Culture and benefits program; details are available on HMH’s linked page.
