Remote Multi-State Payroll Specialist

MediaNews Group is hiring a remote Payroll Specialist to manage multi-state payroll using Workday and ADP. The role covers reconciliations, compliance, employee support, and payroll reporting.

Description

  • Process bi-weekly and semi-monthly payroll for hourly and salaried employees across multiple states, meeting established deadlines
  • Calculate wages, tax withholdings, and deductions while verifying payroll changes
  • Support payroll account balancing and reconciliation activities
  • Prepare and distribute payroll reports to regional Finance leaders
  • Administer monthly bonus and commission payments
  • Review employee time and labor records, partnering with management to correct discrepancies
  • Balance and process garnishments in accordance with regulatory requirements
  • Handle stop-payment requests and pay card processing
  • Resolve employee questions about paychecks, taxes, deductions, leave accruals, direct deposits, and related payroll matters
  • Manage daily payroll tickets and complete required ticket information
  • Supply wage details for unemployment claims and government-required surveys
  • Upload severance documentation and coordinate timely payment processing
  • Compile and process monthly union dues and pension plan payments
  • Protect the confidentiality of payroll information

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state tax regulations, wage policies, and wage-and-hour laws
  • Analytical and detail-focused, with strong organization and accuracy
  • Proficiency with Excel and other Microsoft products
  • Strong customer service capabilities with clear written and verbal communication
  • Able to organize competing priorities and perform under pressure while meeting department and regulatory deadlines
  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively
  • Experience handling multiple tasks in a deadline-oriented environment
  • Proficient with technology, including the full Google Suite
  • Bachelor’s degree in a business-related discipline, or equivalent combined education and payroll experience
  • CPP or FPC certification preferred
  • At least two years of multi-state payroll processing experience
  • Workday and ADP experience preferred
  • Must live in Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, or Texas
  • Must be willing to complete and pass a full pre-employment background check
