Principal Software Engineer, Developer Experience - General Motors

Lead General Motors’ developer experience strategy by building golden paths, automation, measurable engineering improvements, and AI-enabled development workflows. Guide teams across Core IT to improve software delivery, developer productivity, and engineering quality.

Description

  • Lead technical strategy and delivery for platforms, tools, and workflows that improve developer productivity, software quality, and engineering satisfaction across General Motors.
  • Define and promote golden paths for repository structure, CI/CD, testing, security, observability, and deployment.
  • Create automation and self-service capabilities for environment provisioning, pipeline setup, guardrail enforcement, and standards validation.
  • Develop the strategy for integrating AI agents and copilots into planning, coding, testing, documentation, and operations.
  • Work with product, security, infrastructure, and application leaders to turn engineering challenges into platform and tooling improvements.
  • Mentor engineers in software engineering, AI-assisted development, and established engineering practices.
  • Own outcome-based metrics including change lead time, pull request cycle time, change failure rate, and developer satisfaction.
  • Establish and govern engineering standards, reusable patterns, and reference architectures across Core IT and related organizations.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience as a Principal Engineer or senior technical leader responsible for strategy and execution across multiple teams or organizations.
  • Strong systems-thinking skills combined with a product-oriented approach.
  • Experience integrating AI or machine learning into engineering workflows, or a demonstrated ability to learn these applications quickly.
  • Ability to lead without formal authority through mentoring, design reviews, roadmap influence, and cross-team alignment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • At least 10 years of software development experience, including substantial senior, staff, or principal-level work.
  • Strong proficiency in one or more modern programming languages, such as Java, Go, C#, Python, or TypeScript.
  • Experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems in production.
  • Deep experience designing and running modern CI/CD pipelines and release processes.
  • Hands-on experience with developer platforms and SDLC tools, including GitHub or GitLab, CI/CD systems, Jira or ADO, artifact repositories, secrets management, and feature flags.

  • Preferred experience in platform engineering, SRE, or internal developer platforms.
  • Preferred experience in large, regulated, or safety-critical environments.
  • Preferred background in Developer Experience, Developer Productivity, or DevTools organizations.
