Engineering Manager, Site Reliability — Instacart (Canada Remote)

Lead Instacart’s Site Reliability Engineering team in Canada. Guide reliability, scalability, incident response, and operational excellence across the grocery technology marketplace.

Description

  • Manage, mentor, and grow a team of Site Reliability Engineers
  • Establish technical priorities for reliability, scalability, availability, performance, and operational readiness
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, security, infrastructure, and other partner teams
  • Set reliability standards, shape system designs, and deliver improvements to customer and developer experiences
  • Own incident management, response, post-incident learning, service-level objectives, capacity planning, observability, and ongoing risk reduction
  • Advance automation and self-service tools that reduce operational toil and increase deployment confidence
  • Balance immediate operational demands with long-term investments in a rapidly growing environment
  • Present reliability risks, delivery status, tradeoffs, and decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Make sound decisions amid uncertainty, contribute during incidents, and help teams learn from failures

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience
  • At least seven years of experience in software engineering, infrastructure engineering, Site Reliability Engineering, or a comparable field
  • At least two years of experience managing, mentoring, or leading engineering teams
  • Professional experience with cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, networking, containers, orchestration platforms, or related production technologies
  • Experience leading or supporting production incident response, post-incident reviews, reliability improvements, and operational readiness programs
  • Ability to communicate technical risks, priorities, and tradeoffs to engineering leaders and cross-functional partners
  • Preferred: leadership experience with Site Reliability Engineering, platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, or developer productivity teams
  • Preferred: experience running highly available services at significant scale and improving service-level objectives, observability, capacity, or disaster recovery
  • Preferred: experience with infrastructure as code, continuous delivery, monitoring, logging, tracing, and automated remediation
  • Preferred: experience creating or scaling reliability programs across multiple engineering teams
  • Preferred: ability to build alignment, work through ambiguity, and convert complex technical problems into practical plans
  • Preferred: empathetic, transparent, direct, collaborative leadership focused on inclusive team development
