Description

  • Set and lead an independent research agenda focused on large language models and agentic systems
  • Guide research projects from initial hypotheses through training, evaluation, and production release
  • Run large-scale post-training studies using SFT, RLHF, RLAIF, DPO, and emerging alignment methods
  • Advance reasoning, planning, and tool-use capabilities in enterprise agent workflows
  • Create evaluation benchmarks and methods for demanding real-world enterprise use cases
  • Build scalable data synthesis and curation systems, including LLM-as-judge methods, synthetic data generation, and adversarial datasets
  • Influence Writer’s model architecture and training strategy
  • Convert research findings into improvements for enterprise-grade language models
  • Work closely with research engineering and product organizations
  • Publish and present original findings at leading research conferences
  • Serve as a representative for Writer’s work in cutting-edge AI research
  • Coach and support fellow researchers and engineers
  • Report to the Vice President of AI Research

Requirements

  • At least seven years of practical machine learning research experience
  • Advanced expertise in pre-training and post-training large language models
  • A Ph.D. in computer science, machine learning, NLP, or a related discipline, or equivalent research experience demonstrated through substantial independent publications
  • Expert command of SFT, RLHF, RLAIF, DPO, GRPO, and related alignment and reasoning methods
  • Advanced Python skills and proficiency with PyTorch or JAX
  • Experience developing and scaling training systems, evaluation infrastructure, and data synthesis processes
  • A substantial publication record at competitive machine learning or AI conferences, including NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, ACL, or EMNLP
  • Practical experience designing or assessing agentic systems
  • Ability to partner effectively across research, engineering, and product teams
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts to both specialist and general audiences
  • Availability and willingness to participate in collaborative office sessions two to three days each week
  • Located within 50 miles of an office hub or willing to relocate
  • Legally authorized to work in the country where the role is based
  • At least 18 years old
