Residential Counselor, Developmental Disabilities - Dorchester, MA

Provide residential support at Vinfen for people with developmental disabilities in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Help residents build independence, access community resources, and participate in daily and social activities.

Description

  • Deliver individual and group support within a residential program
  • Teach practical skills that promote independence, quality of life, and self-advocacy
  • Keep the residence safe, secure, clean, and well maintained
  • Support community integration and help individuals build and sustain friendships
  • Connect individuals with community-based services, supports, and resources
  • Organize recreational and social activities that foster inclusion and emotional well-being
  • Respect individual choices and support participation in decisions about services and daily life
  • Provide assistive technology and adaptive equipment as needed
  • Encourage employment, volunteering, and involvement in community activities
  • Train and assist individuals with behavioral strategies, fire and safety procedures, appointments, money management, ADLs, shopping, meal preparation, cooking, and household tasks
  • Complete hands-on duties required to carry out support plans
  • Provide transportation when necessary
  • Evaluate physical and emotional condition and report changes to the supervisor
  • Monitor individuals’ funds
  • Maintain records, behavioral and academic data, progress notes, communication logs, incident reports, and activity calendars
  • Procure, store, administer, document, and dispose of medication in accordance with MAP requirements, regulations, and company policy
  • Coordinate with program nurses, case managers, the Visiting Nurses Association, families, and other relevant parties
  • Attend required training sessions and staff meetings
  • Follow applicable regulatory policies, procedures, and standards
  • Complete housekeeping, snow removal, trash disposal, and home maintenance duties
  • Cover shifts at other homes or programs when assigned
  • Act as a human rights advocate and provide physical intervention or First Aid during emergencies
  • Make reports to the Disabled Persons Protections Commission when required
  • Help develop, implement, and document treatment plans, ISP/PSTPs, and clinical programs

Requirements

  • At least one year of related experience or training is encouraged
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Relevant experience may replace academic training in some circumstances
  • Present a valid driver’s license at the time of employment
  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Maintain a valid US driver’s license for at least six months
  • Carry adequate insurance and maintain a safe driving record when using a personal vehicle
  • Pass a driver screening background check
  • Be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, and climb
  • Be able to lift at least 25 pounds using proper techniques or a two-person lift
  • Be able to use a computer, calculator, copier, and printer
  • Be able to assist clients with activities of daily living
  • Be able to speak, hear, and communicate with clients, staff, and external representatives
  • Obtain CPR certification within two weeks of hire
  • Obtain First Aid certification within two weeks of hire
  • Obtain MAP certification within 150 days of hire
  • Obtain PBS Tier 1 certification within 150 days of hire
  • Obtain Safety Care certification within 90 days of hire
  • Understand advocacy, empowerment, self-advocacy, participatory planning, crisis intervention, physical personal management, and household management techniques
  • Work effectively both independently and within an interdisciplinary team
  • Communicate clearly in spoken and written formats
