Head of Technology, Systems and Engineering - Hybrid

Lead shared R&D technology platforms, AI, cloud, engineering, and operations for Johnson & Johnson’s Innovative Medicine organization. Shape secure, scalable systems that support pharmaceutical research and development.

Description

  • Define, operate, and modernize shared technology platforms and products that support end-to-end Innovative Medicine R&D
  • Lead cross-functional platforms and products covering R&D finance and planning, data, AI and compute, enterprise tools, software engineering, cloud optimization, operations, reliability, and product lifecycle management
  • Partner with R&D product lines, Technology Services, Information Security and Risk Management, Finance, Data Science, Engineering, Architecture, and business leaders
  • Set and execute technology strategies and product roadmaps for R&D finance, portfolio planning, resource planning, investment management, forecasting, and performance management
  • Lead shared data, AI, analytics, and compute platform capabilities
  • Advance cloud, data engineering, AI/ML operations, automation, and platform engineering practices
  • Own operational excellence, reliability, observability, resiliency, performance, and service management for critical platforms
  • Advance software and cloud optimization, SDLC automation, DevSecOps, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, test automation, and release management
  • Embed security-by-design practices and coordinate security assessments, risk remediation, infrastructure dependencies, identity and access, resilience, and compliance
  • Establish and enforce enterprise tools, engineering standards, architecture patterns, operational controls, and governance processes
  • Direct the Cross R&D product portfolio through strategy, roadmap prioritization, funding alignment, delivery oversight, and stakeholder engagement
  • Lead, coach, and develop a large, globally distributed team of technology leaders, product managers, engineers, and operations professionals
  • Build an inclusive, high-performing leadership culture across regions and functions
  • Own application and technology lifecycle strategy, including rationalization, upgrades, modernization, decommissioning, vendor transitions, and technical debt remediation
  • Monitor platform health, lifecycle risk, end-of-life dependencies, product ownership, investment needs, KPIs, adoption, and value realization
  • Travel 15–20% domestically and internationally

Requirements

  • A master’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field is preferred; an advanced degree is also preferred
  • At least 15 years of progressive technology leadership experience
  • Substantial ownership of enterprise platforms, operations, product portfolios, or technology transformation
  • Experience in life sciences, healthcare, biotech, pharmaceuticals, or another highly regulated global environment is preferred
  • Expert-level knowledge of cloud platforms, data and AI platforms, application portfolio management, software engineering, technology operations, and cybersecurity integration
  • Experience leading large, globally distributed, matrixed teams and influencing results across business, technology, external partners, and shared enterprise services
  • Ability to set enterprise direction, strengthen the leadership pipeline, develop diverse talent, and drive accountability and performance at scale
  • Strong financial discipline and portfolio management expertise
  • Ability to connect technology investments with measurable business value
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management abilities
  • Experience with Agile and product-centric delivery, DevSecOps, FinOps, ALM/TLM, and architecture governance is strongly preferred
  • Deep knowledge of pharmaceutical R&D operating models and shared technology capabilities across Discovery, Development, Regulatory Affairs, Medical Safety, Data Science, and R&D operations
  • Experience leading large-scale platforms and products across finance and planning, data, AI, compute, engineering enablement, cloud, enterprise tools, or technology operations
  • Ability to operate critical technology services with high reliability, effective service management, measurable performance, and disciplined risk management
  • Experience partnering with enterprise technology, security, infrastructure, architecture, finance, procurement, data, quality, and business leaders in complex global environments
  • Demonstrated success advancing software engineering excellence, SDLC automation, DevSecOps, cloud optimization, platform modernization, and application lifecycle management
  • Ability to shape roadmaps, develop business cases, manage funding, measure value realization, and prioritize investments across a broad product portfolio
  • Experience managing vendor ecosystems, technology dependencies, and multiyear modernization programs
  • Strong executive communication and influencing skills
  • Experience leading through complexity and change across regions, cultures, and functions
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and company policies
  • Promote safe work practices and complete required team training
