CAE Engineer, Piston Structures and Durability – General Motors

Lead piston structural and durability simulations for General Motors cranktrain programs, guiding design decisions through risk assessment and engineering analysis. Advance virtual-engineering capabilities through automation, method development, and cross-functional technical collaboration.

Description

  • Own piston structural and durability assessments from initial problem definition through final engineering recommendations
  • Establish loads and models, run simulations, process results, interpret findings, and produce technical documentation
  • Evaluate piston and related-component behavior under thermal, mechanical, inertia, pressure, bore-distortion, clearance, and other operating conditions
  • Choose suitable CAE model fidelity for screening, risk reduction, and design-release decisions
  • Investigate unusual technical issues, perform sensitivity and variation studies, determine failure mechanisms, and propose analysis or design improvements
  • Relate simulation findings to requirements, DFMEA failure modes, detection and prevention controls, and qualification evidence
  • Create traceable analysis reports and decision materials for program teams, design-release engineers, suppliers, leadership reviews, PPDR/PRTS activities, and warranty or field investigations
  • Maintain and enhance piston-analysis standards, procedures, templates, macros, and reusable data practices
  • Build automation and analytical improvements with Python, MATLAB, Excel/VBA, or similar scripting and post-processing tools
  • Contribute to benchmarking and methodology development through tool comparisons, model-fidelity assessments, correlation evidence, and emerging virtual-engineering practices
  • Transfer expertise by sharing knowledge and mentoring developing engineers and technical partners
  • Partner with teams spanning pistons, rings, connecting rods, cranktrain systems, lubrication and tribology, materials, testing, design, and program management

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, automotive, aerospace, materials engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered
  • Professional experience using CAE, FEA, or comparable simulation methods for structural, durability, thermal-structural, or related mechanical engineering problems
  • Capacity to work independently with limited direction while applying sound engineering judgment
  • Experience defining analysis inputs and boundary conditions, checking model quality, interpreting results, and explaining limitations, uncertainty, and recommendations
  • Ability to resolve non-routine technical problems and deliver moderate-scope assignments through completion
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and customers
  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in a related technical discipline preferred
  • Experience with piston structures, powertrain hardware, CAE tools, engineering workflows, DFMEA, risk-based evaluation, and automation preferred
  • Experience with Abaqus, HyperMesh, FLARE, AVL EXCITE, Python, MATLAB, Excel/VBA, or comparable tools preferred
  • Must be a U.S. Person: U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee, or refugee
  • Willingness to travel less than 25% is required

Benefits

  • Relocation assistance may be available to eligible candidates
  • Programs and resources supporting employee well-being at work and at home
  • Reasonable accommodations are available for applicants with disabilities
