Senior Professional Liability Claims Specialist

Lead complex, high-severity professional liability claims at Hiscox, an international specialist insurer. Oversee coverage analysis, litigation, negotiation, and claims training.

Description

  • Handle complex, high-severity primary Professional Lines claims, including miscellaneous professional liability, A&E, allied health, and media claims, from intake through resolution.
  • Oversee all stages of claims handling and litigation.
  • Coordinate with internal and external partners, including experts, legal counsel, and underwriting teams.
  • Resolve the most severe claims with limited supervision.
  • Prepare detailed technical coverage analyses and correspondence.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the team.
  • Set a strong example in litigation practices and claims file quality.
  • Investigate claims, negotiate resolutions, and use alternative dispute resolution to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Determine which matters are appropriate for trial.
  • Address emerging exposures and trends in claims.
  • Flag suspected fraud and coordinate tracking with the special investigations unit.
  • Maintain claims files in line with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Mentor colleagues and provide structured training when needed.
  • Create and deliver training for claims staff and underwriters.
  • Partner with the US Claims team to resolve claims fairly and promptly while supporting profitability.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience handling Professional Liability and/or Specialty claims.
  • A JD from an ABA-accredited law school may supplement claims handling experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve outcomes on the most severe claims through investigation, negotiation, and effective litigation leadership.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Expert knowledge of coverage in the relevant specialty or focus area.
  • Expert knowledge of litigation processes and negotiation.
  • A proven record of mentoring others.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced analytical ability.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; JD preferred.
  • Adjuster license required, or ability to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Subject matter expertise or technical leadership in other business lines and/or claim types.
  • Ability to work with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to support product innovation or broaden understanding of other areas of the business through training or cross-team projects.
  • Confidence and sound judgment when addressing and resolving difficult or high-severity matters with insureds, attorneys, and brokers.
