Description

  • Develop user-focused machine learning systems for Etsy’s two-sided marketplace
  • Manage models across data and feature pipelines, training, evaluation, and production serving
  • Assess model performance through live A/B testing on Etsy.com and the Etsy app
  • Use machine learning, deep learning, and information retrieval to improve relevance, personalization, and engagement for buyers and sellers
  • Prototype, optimize, and deploy machine learning models at scale
  • Plan and conduct online and offline A/B experiments
  • Diagnose and resolve complex issues in model and system behavior
  • Track product performance and drive improvements with product and analytics partners
  • Collaborate with software engineers, applied scientists, data scientists, product managers, designers, and analytics partners
  • Based on team assignment, build capabilities for sponsored-search retrieval and ranking, ad allocation, user modeling, personalized ranking, multi-objective optimization, intent prediction, dual-encoder and hybrid retrieval, and large-scale indexing and serving
  • Report to the engineering manager responsible for the assigned team

Requirements

  • Experience as a senior or staff-level machine learning engineer
  • Demonstrated use of statistical and machine learning methods to solve practical problems
  • Expertise or experience in information retrieval, search, recommendations, advertising, natural language processing, deep learning, multimodal learning, or reinforcement learning
  • Practical experience training, deploying, monitoring, debugging, and improving production machine learning systems for search, recommendations, or advertising
  • Production experience developing large-scale machine learning systems with Python, Java, Scala, or comparable languages
  • Experience using modern machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow/TFX
  • Ability to write and manipulate data at large scale
  • Ability to produce clear, tested, maintainable code
  • Ability to define requirements and lead a team from design through delivery
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in computer science or a related engineering discipline with at least two years of applied machine learning experience, or equivalent experience
  • Must live within commuting distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn office, with remote consideration outside that area subject to occasional office travel
