Benefits Specialist

Administer multi-state leave, accommodations, and supplemental benefits for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Advise employees and managers while supporting compliance, billing, and benefits program operations.

Description

  • Advise employees on leave of absence and modified work schedule options
  • Administer FMLA, CFRA, SDI, PFL, Paid Parental Leave, and other state and federal leave programs across multiple states
  • Collect and complete required documentation, assess eligibility, and designate qualifying FMLA leave
  • Coordinate return-to-work procedures and communication among employees, managers, and integrated partners
  • Manage supplemental pay through PFL, short-term disability, paid parental leave, sick leave, and vacation
  • Explain leave laws and their interaction with paid time off, workers’ compensation, and disability benefits
  • Process accommodation requests, including ADA requests, and administer other time-off programs
  • Maintain accurate leave and accommodation records, including confidential medical documentation
  • Monitor applicable leave and accommodation laws and contribute to policy updates
  • Support insurance premium billing, payment tracking, reconciliation, and follow-up during unpaid or reduced-pay leave
  • At H01.2 level, support new benefits program implementation, advise on complex benefits policies, resolve benefits issues, deliver training and orientation, assist with annual open enrollment, analyze audit reports, and prepare basic management reports

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Basic knowledge of and experience with employee benefits programs, practices, techniques, standards, processes, and systems
  • Experience explaining benefits information and guidance to employees and their families
  • Experience applying regulatory requirements and relevant state and federal leave-management laws
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic experience using automated business tools and specialized applications, including Microsoft Office
  • At H01.2 level, substantial experience providing individual or group benefits counseling
  • At H01.2 level, effective interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • At H01.2 level, experience working with limited guidance and contributing effectively as a team member
  • At H01.2 level, experience using online HRIS and benefits data systems
  • Eligibility to access the Laboratory in compliance with NDAA Section 3112
  • Selected external applicants must pass a pre-employment drug test
