AI Product Engineer – Backend Node.js (Remote, Algeria)

Lead the backend of Smeetz’s MCP server and AI chatbot, from production APIs and integrations to agent behavior and evaluation. Build reliable AI systems supporting ticketing, bookings, and payments for leisure and entertainment commerce.

Description

  • Lead the Smeetz MCP server and AI chatbot backend, covering services, tools, agent behavior, and safety controls
  • Create APIs and integrations that connect AI features with Smeetz ticketing, booking, and payment capabilities
  • Maintain strong standards for security, performance, and operational reliability
  • Track latency, error rates, call costs, and client usage patterns as core service metrics
  • Investigate and resolve issues using Langfuse observability data
  • Develop evaluation workflows that validate prompt and model updates before deployment
  • Take part in on-call support for the services you own
  • Partner with the product owner and venue-facing teams to translate operator needs into technical plans and priorities
  • Review traces and usage patterns to uncover failures, missing capabilities, and future opportunities
  • Set success measures and communicate the results of delivered work
  • Keep owned systems documented and contribute to the shared Claude Code skill library
  • Report to the VP of Engineering in an individual-contributor role

Requirements

  • At least five years of production software delivery, including three or more years building and operating backend APIs
  • Strong preference for Node.js and TypeScript experience
  • Sound backend engineering knowledge across API design, data modeling, authentication, authorization, queues, asynchronous processing, and production debugging
  • Experience delivering an LLM-powered feature to users, including backend work with tool calling, structured responses, cost and latency management, and real-world failure handling
  • Previous responsibility for a production system with on-call duties
  • Regular use of Claude Code or a comparable agentic development environment beyond code completion
  • Able to work with non-technical stakeholders and convert their needs into actionable technical work
  • Fluent English communication skills
  • Bonus: experience designing agent-facing tools or API surfaces
  • Bonus: knowledge of the MCP specification beyond using MCP clients
  • Bonus: experience with the Anthropic Claude API and tool use
  • Bonus: familiarity with Langfuse or comparable platforms such as LangSmith, Braintrust, or Phoenix
  • Bonus: experience with evaluations and retrieval across support knowledge bases; Intercom Fin experience is relevant
  • Bonus: experience securing agents with write access through permissions, confirmations, prompt-injection defenses, and PII controls
  • Bonus: product engineering experience that includes shaping priorities
  • French or German proficiency is a plus
  • A self-directed, backend-focused, product-aware, AI-native, analytical, and strong writing style
